Art and Creativity: 15 Minute Oil Paint Tutorial using Expressionism Technique (Simple and Easy)

Visual arts made a huge impact in my life. Just by selling my artworks, it has benefitted me financially. It also helped me release the negative emotions I have. Lastly, painting has been like a play time for me with my brushes and palette knife as my toys instead of Barbie dolls.

Expressionism is my favorite among the rest of the art movements. I find it suitable to me among other style because I really am not into details in making an artwork. Just like its name suggests, it has allowed me to experience the depth of my emotions. It is more like going deeper to my soul. Take this artwork that I made just within fifteen minutes.

Let us get started!

The materials that I used is an old painting of mine that I do not like. I also used different colors of oil paints (yellow ochre, light yellow, sap green, emerald green, light pink/ hue of flesh, payne's grey, red, light blue, and dark blue) and a palette knife in making this art project. I prefer not to use paint brush. I prefer oil paint than acrylic because I am having fun using the wet on wet technique.

I started of by painting four light yellow flowers that will serve as the base for my orchids. I also put the yellow ochre on the surface. I wanted to make four bottle-like figures.

I decided to paint the bodies of friars/ bottles using yellow ochre on the left side of every bottles on the painting. I used the palette knife to spread the color.

I added details in our bottle by making it look like a clothing article for the priest/ bottle-shaped figures. I was not using pencil so I just estimated the size and shape of the bottles. I also made sure all four bottles would fit in the picture.

I put sap green oil paint on the right portion of each bottle. The shape of the bottle is starting to be formed as I spread it using my palette knife.

I added few more sap green oil paint to finally have a definite shape of our four wine bottles. I also put few dark blue to create a different hue.

I added light yellow oil paint and spread using the palette knife so that somehow the viewers of this artpiece could see that it is a type or orchid were they looking on to. It may not look the same as the real orchids, but I only imitated the form of this ornamental plant. I also put the flesh tone oil paint for the surface of the wood. I spread it out using the palette.

I added few more details for the bottle but putting payne's grey on the bottom of the bottles.

I started filling the background of the painting by putting light blue. Before totally spreading, I assed a little dark blue.

I was making criss-cross for the background and this is the finish product.

The artist's note: If you take a look, you see flowers (orchids) on top of the bottles. But I have my own interpretation on this one. When I paint, I also want it to connect to the contemporary issues so that the viewers would take time thinking rather than taking selfies with it.

These are actually not four bottles, but walking friars under the flowers. These flowers serve as the guiding light of the society, and to other Filipino people, they have high regard on these church leaders. They became the lamp on their journey in life heading to God.

Meanwhile, I chose the subject walking friars as because in today's Philippine context, some friars meddle with the affairs of the state. But there were also instances, that instead of making a stand, they opt to keep quite.
