TBT: 1984 Wordless Book (Original Artwork)

in art •  7 years ago

I don’t do a lot of reading. It’s not that I can’t, obviously, but it’s just hard for me to stay focused on walls of text. In my early 20s, however, I got an itch to read 1984. A beat up copy was hanging out in the floorboard of my then boyfriend’s (now my unborn child’s father) car. I was able to recollect faint memories of the movie and was really drawn to dystopian storylines at the time. So, I borrowed it and read the book in its entirety and read it in a matter of days.

It had a big impact on me and how I operated in the world. I actually enjoyed the book so much that I turned around and read Animal Farm in one night shortly after. So, six years later when I was assigned to create a 4 panel wordless book for an illustration class, Orwell was the first author to pop into my mind. The project was to boil an existing novel down to 4 main plot points and illustrate them without the use of words.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time for me to reread the book, but thank god for the internet and cliffnotes. After reviewing the main story line, I refreshed my memory of some of the most crucial moments in the story. I was reminded that the end of the book became so intense that I actually skipped about 3 pages during the torture and brainwashing scene.

I think I had initially planned to ink the drawings like I do with many of my illustrations. However, as I sketched with my Col-Erase pencils, I came to really like the messy, scratched up linework. So, I finished illustrating each panel in blue and purple and then did some massive color alterations to get the color grading seen in the finished product.
