In 1963, Edward Lorenz in a paper for the New York Academy of the Sciences posed the question: ‘Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?’ This paper is today seen as the basis of the scientific phenomena commonly known as ‘The Butterfly Effect’.
Little things which seem insignificant to us influence each other in ways which we cannot traditionally observe. This, combined with the seemingly random nature of existence creates a very unpredictable future.
However, what we can observe isn’t necessarily ‘the truth’ or ‘the correct existence’; combining Lorenz’s proposal of the Butterfly Effect with those of parallel and multiple universes; we are left with a state of existence unbelievably complex.
This image attempts to explore a small fraction of these possibilities; attempting to show dynamism and perhaps interaction between these multiple instances of existence. This is not dissimilar to what the Futurists attempted. However it does seem a pointless exercise, as to accurately convey the full spectrum of possibilities an infinitely dense image would be created.
Here I put forth a range of possibilities - only relating to movement - but ask that the viewer consider both physical possibilities as well as those which may not be traditionally observed.
This image was created in my first year of University.
