Title: Immaculate Conception
Medium: Water color
Year: 2020
I made my own rendition to the "rococo" style painting done by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in the year 1767-1769, the year which this art style was most common.
Here's a screenshot of the original painting.
I absolutely love this picture and I thought it is challenging to paint but I would love to try and make a painting of this style.
I just discovered that the painter is known for his rococo style paintings. I guess I like it.
Super interesting to read and learn this! "Rocaille" or "Rococo" it is!
The difference with Baroque and Rococo as stated is that Rococo is less strict in terms of symmetry and it focuses more on curves.
My artwork has a different brightness level I still am not used to the fast changing shadows of watercolor (they change color as they dry)
Anyway let's get to the process!
Process
(1) first is always the sketch!
I used the refill of my mechanical pencil, it's light and thin.
(2) Base tones
Base tones will be washed out, light primary colors and a mix of yellow and pink for flesh tones. You may also use pre mixed colors
(3) Midtones
I start to add darker colors to build volume and depth
(4) adding background lightly
I used a wet on wet technique to make smooth and soft texture clouds
Process video
I have a video with small clips of how I worked through my artwork.
Music: Salve Regina🎶
CONTINUATION
The video has parts where I take a dark color of paint and then wash it out to spread pigment with a smooth gradation or with a certain texture. After the paint dries it will lighten so you may want to reapply or just add another darker layer to it.
LITTLE ANGELS
I started painting angels likewise with the same process. The sketch I make is just for basic shapes and proportions. Adding too much detail by pencil to a watercolor sketch is too dirty to erase and paint over. The less and lighter marks, the better.
PROCESS VIDEO
What I love best about watercolor is that you see the colors change a lot before you. And you just see the wonderful effects of the mixture of colors
The proportions of small baby faces are so tricky to paint, thankfully I managed by just painting lightly
Behind the clouds there are angels of the same color. I just use a beige plus a bit of brown on that
For the Dove and crown of stars it's "leave out method" since it is white light I left out the parts which are supposed to be white.
PROCESS VIDEO
I ink a little bit to emphasize some shadows
Here, finally!
I think this is almost really done by here.
Scanned Artwork
For better viewing quality I scanned and edited the contrast
I think my art is just way too light but I still like it the way it is. It's not supposed to be an exact replica but rather just my own rendition.⚜️
I feel satisfied by my output but I do see which areas I should really improve. But this is why practice makes perfect and an artist will never run out of anything to paint.
Steem on!
Thank you for viewing my painting and I hope you learn something from the tips I have.
See you soon!!!
