The World's Largest Bronze Sculpture. In Texas Of Course.

in art •  6 years ago  (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I've been on an art, sculpture, and fountains quest all week and found that the largest bronze sculpture in the world, according to the city of Dallas, is located right in downtown Dallas. Who knows, they may be right.

Texas likes to pride herself in having the biggest everything. (They probably do have the biggest egos)

I love this sculpture though because it represents the famous Trail Drives of the 1800's which ran from South Texas up through Oklahoma and Kansas with most of them ending in Dodge City or Abilene. I did a long series of posts on them.

The sculpture is composed of many sculptures actually. There are three cowboys and 70 head of Long Horn steers. The steers are fix feet in height so it IS alot of bronze and collectively it's an amazing work of art and very realistic.

Here are some of the best shots I could find, I haven't been there myself yet:

Here's another one keeping them in line:

The way this sculpture got here is a big real estate developer wanted an iconic Old West attraction in downtown Dallas. Now that fact itself is pretty funny because it's sister city which sits just to it's West is Fort Worth. And Fort Worth was where the famous Chisholm Trail came though and where all the stockyards were.

In fact, Dallas looked down on Fort Worth because of being a "Cow town" with all the rowdy cowboys, saloons, fights, acres of brothels and all the rest which came with being a cow town.

Dallas didn't want anything to do with that image and now they're the ones who wanted a sculpture to commemorate the cattle drives! lol.

They even had some lawsuits filed against the project for being "historically inaccurate." But here we are today and it's one of Dallas's biggest tourist attractions.

It's right down by the infamous Dealey Plaza where President Kennedy was assassinated. Here's what that looks like:

Hey Lord Janton, thought I'd see what's happening at this train wreck of a blog and I was relieved to find something I could read haha!

I have been to Dallas a few times but I never came across this grand sculpture you talk about here. I have been to Dealey Plaza and did the audio tour there. That's a really harrowing place for me. Maybe because I have seen so many videos about it and that part of American history fascinates me.

How far are you from Dallas?

Howdy sir niickyhavey! oh I see you missed my previous posts on sculptures right before this one, perhaps they were too artistic for you! This is a pretty rough one here, I didn't think it would hold much appeal to a refined Englishman.
We're out in the country but only about 35 miles from the edge of the city. A little too close for my tastes but it does come in handy sometimes.
Haha! I IS usually a train wreck but I think that attracts some people who like to watch disasters! lol.

Hey Lord Janton! I couldn't make it past the wreckage to get to your other blogs so took what I could get on this one haha!

35 miles is OK, we're 25 miles from London here which is plenty to be out in the countryside but close enough to venture in to the dirty capital haha! Though USA is a massive country so 350 miles would probably be too close over there!

Lol @ the disaster watchers! There are some sadistic people out there haha

Posted using Partiko Android

howdy sir nickyhavey! well I try to have something for everyone, concerning the disaster watchers, that's why I throw in the redneck post every once in a while! lol. Is London a dirty city? I think of it as foggy and rainy but not dirty, I figured dirt wouldn't be allowed by the snowflakes in charge over there!

Haha you're clever and funny man Lord Janton!

The Underground train network is pretty dirty and I always come out if London feeling a little suffocated. That stuff gets in your clothes and just feels a little bit dirty when you breathe in. I'm not made for cities haha

Posted using Partiko Android

oh wow sir nickyhavey, are you talking about smog? That would be really shocking! heaven forbid, how could that be possible over in the land of Greenies?

No it's not smog Lord Janton. Rather the underground train network air is a bit claustrophobic and not so "fresh". The outside air is pretty clean but it's a city with 10 million people in (or there abouts) so lots of fumes. They do have "low emission zones" where bigger vehicles can't go through.

Posted using Partiko Android

oh I see. Thank you for the clarification sir nickyhavey, do you go there often? and if I ever make it over there will you take us around to see the sights for a small pittance of a fee? lol. free beer or something?

Hey, in a few years there will be no fumes because it will all be electic.

That is an impressive work of art! Did you find how many sculptors worked at creating it? It couldn't possibly have been all one guy, it would take a lifetime to make that many cows, wouldn't it? I wonder if any of them are repeats? 😃🤔

I read several articles on it and they all just named one sculptor, a guy named Summers but I would think that he would have to have a team to make all those! I don't know that much about the process but I'd think it would take at least a year. The details on the cowboys is awesome!

They are amazing! I can't begin to imagine how anyone can create that many different steer poses.

I couldn't find an article about the making of that but I know I could eventually, I just ran out of time but yes, it's so realistic that he had to do alot of observing or is very familiar with them, he's from Dallas so mabye he grew up in the country.

oh that's amazing, no I wish I would have seen that before I did my post! 250 grand to have those reset!

I thought you would want to see it!

thanks that's a great article and that sculpture is going to be a bit smaller for awhile!

Well this looks quite interesting, but I haven’t seen this sculpture when I’ve been in downtown Dallas. Love the details!

Howdy violetmed! oh I assumed that you'd have seen this one! Well it's so realistic and the details on the cowboys is amazing!

Yes, I agree! Next time we are in downtown we will have to go search it out!

Just like these live buffaloes. Great photos.

Howdy there nilpan! I agree, thank you for reading and commenting!

Wow, we have finally got to Texas! Therefore, all previous posts with those outstanding sculptures take us to your homeland :) And it really looks like the largest one in the world, made of bronze. Very impressive!! thank you for sharing, I can say now I like it the most

Howdy zirochka! I love this one too because it's a Cowboy sculpture but for sheer elegance, beauty and artistic impression the wonderful sculptures in yesterdays post are hard to beat, I don't think you saw that one or at least you didn't comment, which it's fine if you didn't comment but I know you would appreciate the artistry of the work of your fellow European sculptor. in case you missed it:

Hello, John! Of course, I saw that post with outstanding artwork. I even read all the comments, so after that I decided that I have nothing to add to all those words of delight :)
I just thought... probably I-d also share some art that stroke me recently. At least you may like it

howdy zirochka! I like everything you send! lol. I will get to it I promise.

Take your time ))))

I almost started to comment, @janton, that the steer and riders were all separate, and thus couldn't really be one huge bronze statue. I'm sure the combined amount is impressive, as well as the total distance covered, but it's more of a collection of statues or presentation than it is one big one.

Times obviously change, and while Dallas may have not gotten along with Forth Worth then, they apparently have less of a problem taking their limelight now, especially when BIG dollars are involved. That's one of the 'big' things Texas is known for, too, let us not forget. :)

That all said, this is very impressive. Next time (if there is one), we're in Dallas, I'll need to put in on my list because I missed it the first time or two around. :)

Howdy sir Glen! yeah, I don't know when you were here last but they were created in 1994 so I assume you were here since then? What is one of the things Texas is known for? Big dollars?

Yeah, it's only been a few years ago since I was there last (2010, somewhere in there), so I definitely could have experienced it if I'd known about it.

Yes. Big dollars. Big dreams. Big money. You go to Texas to seek your fame and fortune. Cattle, oil, aerospace, now general tech.

howdy sir Glen! yes sir, I got ya now. Texas is definitely exploding in growth, too much too fast I think but what do I know?

Pretty impressive and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger artwork made of bronze. Great expression and movement in these Long Horn steers. The cowboy looks cool too!

howdy sir reinhard-schmid! yes sir I agree, collectively that is ALOT of bronze. I was very impressed by the details on the cowboys as well. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

For me as an artist this is particularly interesting! I'm also very proud, that one of my originals found its way to Texas a few years ago. Completely different though... painting on reverse side of glass. Shipping it there made me a bit nervous!

oh wow, shipping it all the way to Texas yes! lol. I guess it made it though. Did you do a post about that piece or do you have a photo of it handy? Did you see my post of the sculptor in Germany that I did yesterday? She's Polish but lives in Dresden.

Yes, the painting made it in one piece, thank god. You can see it here if you like. It was bought for a well known colleague of mine by his wife for his birthday.

Saw that post about Malgorzata Chodakowska just now. Breathtaking!

Howdy again sir reinhard-schmid! oh, that is an amazing piece! It is so unique, it reminds me of some classic works in style that I've seen in the past but it's been so long that I don't remember the artist. What do you call your style of work? And you are doing an animated version of this piece in digital? That will be something to see! You must have a tremendous amount of patience!

Hard to name a style, so I simply call it "phantastic art".. surrealism comes close enough too ;-)

The animation will still take a while, as that one is going to be really complex. Will publish another one tomorrow though!

Thank you sir reinhard-schmid for the explanation. I can only imagine how hard it would be to do an animated one!

You mean to tell me Dallas is a buncha pansies scared of real Cowboys?

How far away from you is that art work, Janton?

haha! yeah Dallas used to be but apparently not anymore. lol. We're about an hour away, maybe a little more depending on traffic. We're only 35 miles from the Northeast edge of the city.

Go grab a few pictures with your camera.

I hate cities. I avoid them like the plague.

Quite a "Giant" work. I'm impressed with the sculptor who did this. That's a LOT of work. Each piece has it's own lifelike quality and personality and they way they are moving through the park. That real estate guy sounds like he bulldozed his vision onto Dallas but it was a pretty cool result. If kids like it you're not doing so bad.

Howdy sir rossfletcher! yeah the kids love it, there were lots of pictures with kids hanging on the horns and such. I loved the incredible details of the work too, the cowboys were super detailed. I wonder how long that took him, I would guess at least a year but I have no idea what something like bronzes take.

I'm surprised there haven't been any lawsuits related to people walking into them with their phones in front of their faces, yet! A bronze horn to the head would leave one heck of a bump!

I was just thinking that the Spaniards could do something similar. You know, with a bunch of people running in front and maybe an impaled tourist being hoisted into the air... lol I never got to Pamplona to see that. I bet the photo ops would be spectacular, if you could find the right spot.

haha! oh man, that's a great idea, what a tourist attraction that would be if it was done very realistically!
The empaled tourist would be the main draw. lol.

Howdy steem-plus and thank you for the upvote!

That is an impressive piece of art! I love that the artist incorporated water into the sculpture. It adds an extra bit of realism. So very cool. Thanks for the art lesson! And a little bit of history thrown in, as usual!

Howdy goat-girlz! I thought it is designed so well, one of the steers is going for a drink of water even and the cowboys are perfect and so detailed! Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

Hello...
@janton
Absolutely fantastic. Wow.!!!!!!!!
I would love to see these in person..
Amazing...
:D

howdy annephilbrick! I agree and I need to get down there to see them too! Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

A park of sculptures of the Trial Drives. Awesome! Very unique, and breathtaking.

Howdy sir Vincent! yes sir, if you were there you would probably jump up on the back of one like a little kid riding a horse!

Good afternoon janton, the sculptures look so real. Thank you for giving me a little peek.

Howdy angiemitchell! yes they are very detailed and realistic, I marvel at the skill of these artists!

Great post! I've been there and it really is an awesome display! #texanthroughandthrough

Howdy there rmitchaelglass! Thanks, I need to get down there and see it for myself. Thanks so much for reading and commenting! How are you liking Steemit so far?

This is an epic series of sculptures it must have taken ages to build the whole thing.
Very impressive art works for sure if only for the amount of effort to create it.

Howdy sir molometer! yes I tried to find an article about the sculptor and I didn't find it but I imagine that he had to have a team to help him with such large pieces. I bet it took over a year to do. The price tag was close to 5 million dollars so I'm sure the guy had a big team!

I have seen bronze statues of cowboys before but so much smaller. There is a very famous one as I recall. I think it's called the Pony Express.

Source

Howdy today sir molometer! yes sir that's a Frederick Remington sculpture called Bronco Buster, he's my favorite Western sculptor. Wow I'd love to have some of his pieces even if they were replicas! Yes the ones in Dallas are quite large but I think they need to be since they're out in a large open space and this way kids can play on them! lol.

Hey man I have been enjoying these past couple of posts, some really cool sculptures from around the world! Thanks for sharing....

I also wanted to ask how you use esteem, as in are you going through the mobile app or the app you download to your computer, etc..? Thanks in advance!

Howdy sir simms50! Thanks for the kind words on the posts, I've had a great time looking at marvelous creations and art over the last week!

Regarding esteem, I just downloaded the desktop app because I don't use my phone for anything but calls and it's a strain to see things, I like big screens!

Thanks for the info! I downloaded it yesterday and have been using it since! So far so good! Thanks!

yay! I'm glad to hear it sir simms50, it's a wonderful app and a real boost to our accounts. for free. lol.

No boost from them yet...maybe it takes time for that! :-)

I'll ask one of their main curators to check.

you should get a vote today, the curator is going to check and make sure you are in their system for upvotes.

You sir are awesome! Thanks for your help!

sorry sir simms50, just got word from the main curator, here's what she said:

"Simms may not get an eSteem vote on his religious posts. Curators tend to avoid all religion posts, but there are a bunch of new curators right now, so who knows."

So all is not lost but like she said, we'll have to wait and see.

Even though I was only 3 when the assassination took pace i recognized that spot immediately,I gues sit shows how much it has been televised over the years

And WOW what a cool and huge sculpture project I wonder how long it took to make them all

howdy again JJ, I was trying to find out more details about the actual making of all those but didn't find it, it had to be a massive and time consuming project and the detail on the cowboys is astounding!

It must have been a huge project for sure and I hope it is to stay there for as long as it last because it is so cool
I find it is often hard to find details about art pieces like this

Evenin’ Cowboy! How are you doing?
Utterly amazing photos. I love the sculpture/sculptures of the longhorns and cowboys. U&R

Howdy redheadpei! I'm doing great. Just got in from working outside, it's sunny and 80 degrees here which would be 26.6 C so, perfect weather in other words! I agree about the sculptures, I was very impressed, especially with the details on the cowboys.
What's going on up there? Still have snow on the ground?

Pretty quiet these days, Cowboy. Still some patches of snow here and there but weather getting warmer. It was 11 C ( 52 F degrees) today. Still cool for this time of year but I’m happy with anything above freezing after the winter we had.

Oh 52 is cool for this time of year up there? Well then it sounds like you'll be in the 70's in no time!

I found this to be amazing. I'm sending it to my husband and son who have both been to down town Dallas and will probably go again.

Oh how interesting, thank you willowwisp! I think they'll love that whole scene there.

My husband just told me he has been there several times and the display is magnificent! I guess I'm going to have to go see it.

Oh that's wonderful, yes it will be a fun one to see in person!

Oh that's wonderful,

howdy norwegiansteem! yes it's quite a sight, lots of pictures show little kids hanging from the horns of the steers, lol. It's exactly like a small herd looked with minus the dust and waste!

Cool, a playground for kids 😜 thank you for showing us all this amazing statues.

Posted using Partiko Android

Howdy norwegiansteem! yes exactly, the kids treat it like a playground, well said and you are very welcome.

That is art on a huge scale @janton I have to say that these sculptures are magnificent and I can understand why they'd be such a popular tourist attraction.

I'm enjoying this creative journey you are taking us on. Have a wonderful weekend John. 🌼 🌷 🌼

Howdy Trudee! I thought you would enjoy it being an artist and all, but don't get used to it! lol. yeah sometimes I post artistic stuff but not often. Thanks for the kind words and it's a very impressive endeavor for sure! I was so impressed with the realistic details of the cowboys.

Wow! Those sculptures are great works of art and very realistic. So, you Texans have big egos? LOL!

haha! Alot of Texans do that's for sure, that's why I have to poke fun at them but I'm not one of those. I'm about as meek and humble as a church mouse. What are you doin tonight?

What am I doing? Right now I am chatting with you. : ) What are you up to?

howdy again Butterfly! I'm working on a post for tomorrow. And you're getting ready for bed!

Right you are! I guess I will see ya tomorrow on your post. Sweet dreams jonboy! : )

oh ok, I guess this is it for tonight, kind of a short visit but I reckon it's better than nothin!

It is not surprising that this is the biggest sculpture composition in Texas. It is impressive how many figures were created and put together. I like them. What surprised me is the lawsuits for not been historically accurate. There is always someone to be against, isn't it?

Howdy today nelinoeva! yes, I don't understand the lawsuits either, the people suing lost thank goodness, I think they were just jealous that they didn't have such a nice on in Fort Worth. Thanks so much for commenting!

Truly grand statue and so realistic, wow! I had no idea such a work of art existed. I also think that this is the perfect transition post from your statue series to your upcoming Wild West series. Well done Janton 😊

Howdy Miss Lena! It IS close to a Western post isn't it? That would be perfect but I didn't start the next series today so I guess I blew it! lol. I agree about the statues though and thought that they are incredibly detailed and realistic.

Oh, not yet? I thought you were about to start the new series. Oh well.

Howdy again Miss Lena! Yes I am about to start it but it would have been better to start it after the cattle drive sculpture post but instead I did a business story today because I wasn't ready for the series to start. oh well. lol.

Oh I see. I am pretty sure no one will know that anyway, lol.

I'm sure you are right Miss Lena, you always are! lol. and your daughter and grandkids better listen to you!

Unfortunately they are not, but thank you Janton, lol.

Howdy Miss Lena! They are not what..listening to you?
what's wrong with them, they probably will down the road a bit.
Our grandkids were such know-it-alls that we couldn't tell them squat
and then in later years they started realizing some things. lol.

That's really cool, and it looks quite large, like it takes a lot of space. Love it! Sounds like it should have been in Fort Worth!

howdy sir Keith! yes it should have been in Fort Worth and they aren't thrilled since it's the number two tourist destination after Dealey Plaza.
I suppose it won't do any good to ask what you're doing this weekend right? Same old thing like me? lol.

amazing sculptural composition !!!!! It looks like this is really something unique !!!!!

howdy again tali72! it really is and it was expensive, it cost 5 million dollars!

Wow!!!!!
