A Sacred Mountain: the Asturian Monsacro

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

They say, and I believe so, that the Nuberu resides on its summit, as well as some other little gods of the Asturian pantheon, from time immemorial. And it must be true, judging from the sudden storms that form without warning about it, and the eternal mists that keep it for a good part of the year, including the summer months: the Monsacro. Accessing this place of the spirit is not easy; even though there are several trails, the climb constitutes an exercise in effort that is not negligible-especially if the path of the Llorá is used-and not in vain is it considered a pilgrimage route to the two curious Romanesque hermitages that during a good part of the year, they only coexist with the cattle: the hermitage of the Magdalena and the hermitage of Santiago.

Difficult it would be, then, that in such a special place, men would not have progressively displaced the gods, replacing and granting cults and religions, and that, in the interim period between one another, the legends, which are probably born in the precise At the moment when the aura of History becomes opaque, it will not surface with its spectacular fantastic load.

Leaving aside the possible presence of the restless militant fratres of the Temple, it seems more than probable that here they stopped and were hidden for some time, the holy relics brought from Jerusalem by Santo Toribio, and later transferred by Pelayo and a group of soldiers from Morcín, after the Visigothic hecatomb and the fall of the capital of the kingdom: Toledo.

Certainly there must be, evidently, when both the ark and the relics are kept today in the crypt of the cathedral of Oviedo. But perhaps the most interesting, after all, lies in the character, eminently sacred, that this distant mountain just 8 kilometers from the capital of the Principality, had since time immemorial for the different races and cultures that inhabited its surroundings.

And one thing is certain: the beauty of the environment and the sensations that are experienced, once perched on the top, well deserve the effort.

Asturias es una maravilla.

Cierto.
