The best kiss of medieval Spanish art

It is not the only representation of this style, obviously, but it may be the most graphic and representative, of how many I have seen so far. Asturians say that, as a rule, they are usually as closed as their inaccessible mountains, that the anonymous medieval sculptor who raised the main cover of the church of what was the formidable monastery of San Pedro, Villanueva de Cangas -actually reconverted at the Parador Nacional de Cangas de Onís- he represented the farewell of King Fabila, son of Don Pelayo, on that fateful occasion when he started hunting and a bear killed him.

It may be true or it may be that a much deeper truth is hidden in the background; but of what there is no doubt, is that immortalized in the stone, a farewell that, after all, is as emotional as those great Hollywood dramas, in which hero and heroine cling desperately, perhaps sensing the definitiveness of his farewell. And from a perspective, at least ironic, it could be added, too, that in the end, the screw kiss is not a modern invention.
