What It's Like To Work On A Coloring Book With 70 Artists

in art •  8 years ago

The Adult Coloring Book Treasury, If you love to color you've probably heard of it. It's the fattest coloring book on the coloring book market. Sold AT COST! I'm part of both books!

It's crazy because we were able to collaborate and do the WHOLE thing online! How did we pull it off??

  • We had two leaders who were in charge of assembling, and making the book come to life.
  • We set up a facebook group for everything
  • We worked on our coloring book pages
  • We submitted it through an online thing, Which our "leader" made to check for errors.
  • We would often vote on certain guidelines, Like who is allowed to post what, What quality we expect, etc.

And It surprisingly worked out; We got this gorgeous book in our hands. A large book. Sold at the lowest price possible.
Our first one was good too, But to be honest, I feel that the second one is much better quality overall.

Adult Coloring Book Treasury: 110 illustrations from 55 artists

Adult Coloring Book Treasury 2: 130 Illustrations from 70 Artists

Why are we doing this when no one makes a profit?

NO one gets paid, That is why we keep it at the lowest price. Instead, we get EXPOSURE! Our coloring pages are in there, With our names on the margins. That way people can "sample" our work and hopefully purchase our book later. So far I feel like it's paid off and to a certain degree, I feel like my sales have gone up as a result.

Here is a flip through video of our book, The picture that is mine is the "eye." pattern thing.

What About Advertising & Marketing?

We are all required to advertise a little bit; it's part of the "fee" of being in the book.
We are required to,

  • Buy a copy of the book.
  • Color at least 2 pages (I"m trying to color the whole thing)
  • Advertise the book in coloring book groups,

I feel like because so many people are involved it's somewhat easy for us to get sales. Our best seller rank on the second one is currently at 1,400. It's exciting.

Tips if you decide to do a compilation book,

  • Have a leader, Who is hard working, Picky and experienced. We wouldn't have been successful without the help of Jason.
His attention to detail is incredible, and we have a gorgeous Treasury because of it.

  • Be open with your vision. Many people had many different ideas on how a big project like that should be tackled. Sometimes things didn't happen the way I wanted. Like in the second one, I was allowed only 1 page in the treasury, not 2, and The book is arranged in alphabetical order, I would prefer it based on when we submitted the artwork.

But the point is, Not everyone will get everything that they want, And that's okay.

I don't color inside the lines. I don't like borders.

Hahah Are you an artist?

Responding to post AND comments lol. Great piece and adult coloring books are awesome! We had some at a vacation resort we went to. Just left in rooms... Fun to see what people had done before us and leave our mark. Also.... Lines I have to follow, art has rules, even if you get past them and break the rules, it's from understanding them that helps transgress (corny?) and I also have pens I use for my stuff.... NEVER EVER TOUCH THEM! Thanks

That is so cool! I'm glad they left them for you :)
I agree Heheh!! Art does has rules, You can't make a pencil drawing 3d, you can't make the paint float.

Hehe don't worry I won't touch your pens hhaha!

Are you splitting the earnings equally among all 70 artists?

No, WE aren't making any profits. Any profit I make on this post will go towards a giveaway :)

My wife has recently started colouring as a hobby. She even has her own set of pens that she won't let the kids touch!

LOL that is awesome! Some of those pens are EXTREMELY expensive haha So I understand why.

:)

My wife really gotten into the adult coloring book hobby. The detailed the better for her. She's disabled and needs things to occupy her time from the La Z Boy.

Aww man! This coloring boook has lots of detailed stuff.
It's good she likes to color, I feel like it's extremely good for your mental health. I often color after a stressful day.

Simply great idea!

Thank you :) It wasn't my idea, But the guy who came up with the idea is very smart.

I've been fascinated lately with the rise of adult coloring books. Thanks @kaylinart for giving us an insider look at how the "Adult Coloring Book Treasury" was put together.

Hehe NO problem :)
