Late Night Owl - Who? You?steemCreated with Sketch.

Do you burn the midnight oil? Are you often awake into the wee hours of the morning?

Actions that are repeated regularly become habit. And so, it has become a bit of a habit of mine to be working late into the might painting. I know I am not the only creative person to do this. This I discovered very early on when I was still in high school. I would sit up late reading and most often writing. It was a time of peace, everything was still and I could be left alone with my thoughts, until one of my parents ordered me off to bed.

Now it is a matter of daytime distractions and finding my flow with painting. Even when I have the best intentions of retiring to bed at a decent hour, a loaded palette of paint implores me to finish off what I have laid out and not leave to dry and waste.

Sometimes it is simply a matter of me just being so consumed with the progress I'm making I just don't want to put the brush down.

However, it does set me up for vicious circle of late rising and late to bed. Then breaking that rhythm requires some effort. Why would I want to do that if I am being productive anyway?

What I discovered, was that if rose early, and started early with my work, the amount I achieved by lunch time equalled that of a full days work. After lunch I still had then rest of the day to continue or attend to other things. But, the most important thing is not to allow myself to be distracted first thing in the morning by other things. Then the morning is lost. My biggest distraction is... the internet. (Hello Stemmians, here's looking at you! Too much interesting content.)

So, just like a reformed alcoholic avoiding their addictive fixation, avoiding the internet when I start my day does wonders for my productivity.

I have the following quote fixed to the wall above my desk.

You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.

The above image is the current painting I'm working on. Stay tuned for the final piece in the next couple of days.

Hello Leo! I still have the same problem... Look at me commenting at 4:43am... Playing around with photoshop, getting images ready for the office. And i have 3 hours left to sleep until i have to be at the university. It's been like that since i can remember... Your advice and observation is a must. Thank you!
Cheers!

It really takes awareness and discipline to break these habits. 8P Organisation is part of it also.
Good fortune on your mission @svdsdragunov!

The painting is coming up beautifully. The underpainting is awesome . Great details. "Being consumed" is portrayed to accuracy 😊

Thank you @nehab! I ran out of time today to post the finished painting. But, I will do so tomorrow. =)

cool... Will check it out when you post :)

I always thought the late night creativity was because artists are "dream harvesting"..

Stealing out across the rooftops...

I can relate to this very much, thank you! When I read Tim Ferris's book (The 4 hr. Workweek) I found it made sense to me as well when he said that your best productive hours are the first few after upon awakening :)

It is when we are our freshest and most active... well after coffee for some. 8D

Yes, this is a real problem here too, and morning is gone as a result with me having done no work XD I should probably try working first and steeming afterwards, I think I was doing that at one stage (or steeming in between working because I have the attention span of a gnat anyway) but then winter happened so I started steeming while I considered it too cold to get out of bed with my phone and it just kind of leaked into summer even though I actually get up in the morning now. Arrgh XD

I also have to put off checking for and replying to comments. ;-)
Back to the easel!

Oh that counts? Erm...[looks guilty] XD

Hope you got a good amount of work in :D

I’ve been staying up anywhere between 2-6am and it’s extremely peaceful. I’m not always productive but I’m fairly relaxed.

I certainly appreciate the peacefulness, but I discovered I enjoy the energy of the morning. Very early starts when it is still dark allows you to start off with that stillness and then build with the day as it wakes up.

So will it be a late one tonight @vermillionfox? =)

Most likely!

I'm looking forward to see your completed painting , sometimes we drown in routine life, and art can be a way to find ourselves again and go ahead.

You won't have long for the finished painting Adele. =)
I aim to make art my routine.

great start! waiting to see complete painting!

Working on it! =)

Night is seductive with it's quietness, but mornings, when you have them are magical. So I'm dual person :)

Its like being a fan of red and white wine.

:( , I am :)

Nice picture

Interesting alternative take on Rodin's 'The Thinker'

Well my profile pic is Rodin's 'Thinker'. The above painting is referenced from a marble sculpture.

It is so true about morning productivity! Same for me, both the effectiveness and wasting time online.
