When a study turns into a small painting.

in art •  7 years ago

Sometimes before I paint a larger painting I will make a study or two to try out different ways to get to know my set up better. I usually have a rule also, that if I do a study and get bored then I won't make it into a bigger picture.

Today I am sharing two studies that I made, one that turned into a large scale painting and one that didn't go any furter.
What they both have in common thou, is that I liked them both enough to put a frame on them and sell them as little paintings.

Here they are;

Both paintings are oil on canvas and the sizes are 20 x 25 cm and 20 x 20 cm.

The first one I made into a larger scale painting and ended up being one of my favorite still lifes that I made to this date.

Here are a few pictures of the study, including the finished version;

Do you ever make studies before you start a painting or a creative project? :)

Hope you're all good and enjoying this fine Tuesday ;)

Painted studies, no, but in the past year a number of my drawings have made that transition. I'm usually working things up on the computer first, as it allows for a more rapid development of the concept.

Oh man, I really wish I was better at the computer stuff, hehe.. I know quite a few people who use it and it sure seems like the perfect tool! :)

Maybe its the next thing you should skill yourself up on. Easy part is, there are heaps of online tutorials. You also don't have to purchase commercial software as there are Open Source equivalents for everything these days. eg. I use Krita as a Photoshop replacement.

Beautiful! How did I not see this profile earlier?

Thank you very much @gric! :D Thought the same myself the other day when I found yours ;) Great work! :)

Thats a really neat process, andboth paintings look gorgeous!

Thank you very much @justaboutart! :)

a little bit of research for sure before starting the things off :) BTW very nice paintings :)

Thank you so much @blazing! :)

That is a great idea to do smaller images first. I am going to start this way. I work with graphite and starting small would result in many more finished projects. Thank you for you post!

Thank you for your omment @dansononlife! :) My pleasure, I hope you have a fun time exploring your work through ''going small'' ;)

I make a number of drawings, before I start my actual piece on glass, but nothing with an even remotely finished touch like your "little paintings". Sometimes I do a sheet of glass with just samples of color or an effect, to see, how it turns out. Only stuff for the drawer though.
