Rising upstream of the Neva River, we see another major bridge. This is the Bolsheokhtinsky bridge. This bridge connects the historical part of St. Petersburg and the Malaya Okhta district. The construction of the bridge began on the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava on July 10, 1909. The bridge was named Emperor Peter the Great. Since 1953 the bridge has received the name of Bolsheokhtinsky.
The construction of the bridge in this place on the river Neva was conceived as far back as 1829 by Emperor Nikolai the First. However, the construction was postponed until better times, and at this place there was a boats crossing from one coast to another. In 1880, the issue of building a bridge again became urgent. It was necessary to connect the center of St. Petersburg with the Okhta suburb.
In 1900, at the beginning of the construction of the Troitsky Bridge, preparations began for the erection of the Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge. In 1901, an international competition was announced for a bridge project. The competition won the project of two Russian bridgebuilding engineers Grigory Grigoryevich Krivoshein and Vladimir Petrovich Alyshkov. But the project required further development and the engineers Bobrovsky, Sheloumov and Peredery joined the group.
In 1909 the construction of the bridge began. In October 1911, the bridge was inaugurated.
Four towers were installed on the bridge supports.
In 1993 - 1997, the bridge was completely reconstructed. The bridge is a three-span bridge with central part which may be opened for navigation. The length of the bridge is 334.75 meters, width 26.5 meters.
I introduced you to another bridge of St. Petersburg - Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge. Thank you for attention.
