Continuing on going through some older works in my holiday boredom. We had a plein air course back in 2009 with visiting teachers and students from St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. We did about a week of painting in few locations here in Finland and after that we spend few days in Russia visiting the academy and museums. It was quite intense experience and left a lot of good memories. We weren't quite as prepared as the russian students though and got repeatedly advised against using paper plates as palettes and such. I sometimes imagine the rolling of the eyes by the esteemed professors, though they were very kind and shared a lot of valuable tips. Overall i could have been sharper with the brushwork but thats another thing. This is one of the better ones from Imatrankoski rapids.
oil on canvas, 2009

Very impressive AND impressionistic :) Why is it called "plein air" course? as a reference for old impressionistic french masters?

Thank you. That is the origin and been commonly used term for painting outdoors from those time. actually the title was intensive landscapepainting coursedirecy translated from finnish, it sort of expects landscape to be painted outdoors. Sure the aim was to be more realistic or just paint as good as you can :)

Nice! I like the colors of the sky reflecting in the water.
From my experience Russian academy-school painters are indeed quite strict in such technical things, like for example how much paint you squeeze onto the palette, etc.
