As we consider the purpose and function of new-age visual technologies like Virtual and Augmented Reality, we consider where the graphic designers who drive this visual content fit in relation to art history. So, we spent some time putting words next to a term that’s been elusive for generations.
Art.
…
Art is the expression of human consciousness, embodied in visual, auditory, written, and performing artifacts that express the author’s imaginative or technical skill. We appreciate art for its beauty and emotional power.
This form of human communication includes the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art.
Visual art is the oldest documented form. It includes the creation of images or objects in painting, sculpting, printmaking, photography, and other visual media.
Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts. Similar to decorative art (like advertising), architecture involves the physical creation of objects — an application in which it’s practical use is essential to its function.
Beyond these forms, art expands into a broader definition, including music, theatre, film, dance, literature and new interactive media.
