Pencil Drawing - Fort Grey, Guernsey - Art and Photography

in art •  7 years ago

I am currently staying in Guernsey at the moment, my home island where I was born and I am doing a series of paintings of Guernsey landscapes. Guernsey is an island located in the English Channel, south of England.

One of the most famous sites in Guernsey is the historical Fort Grey also known as 'The Cup and Saucer'. It was built in 1804 by the British as a defence during the Napoleonic Wars. I am going to do an oil painting of this historical building hopefully with a different take on it.

I have been compiling pencil sketches of Fort Grey to plan the composition and get an idea of the over tonality of this landscape. I have designed the composition in a manner that the boats and the direction of the water lead the eye to Fort Grey itself.

I always start with thumbnail sketches first, then a final sketch. Here are my pencil sketches.

And here are some of my photos. I have changed the composition and have designed it from a ground level view perspective.

The evening I took these photos there was a beautiful sunset. The Hanoir lighthouse can be seen in the distance on the right.

Fort Grey has now become a shipwreck museum.

I'm looking forward to starting my painting of Fort Grey.
