Thaumazo: Artist Insight & Appreciation

Artists’ Gallery

Thaumazo is from S.Korea! He’s got a strong illustrative technique that I’d like to show off to you today.

I would not say that Thaumazo is a beginner, he’s certainly got several basic to intermediate aspects down. The sense of line-thickness for objects and contrasting lighting is good. His artworks tend to have a predominant focus on characters, so he’s got a strong focus on the primary subject and balances the the composition around the character. His style boasts a lot of ‘T H I C C’ female characters, of which their proportions are done well; I can tell by his use of line and lighting that his grasp of layering and dimensionality is at a good place. He certainly can improve in regards to having more dark and enhancing the gradient for the shadows; I feel this would really add an extra level to his works!

What I see first is the lovely variance in form that Thaumazo uses. Adding these particular objects, in this case her wings, sword, and the chair, build up the personality of the character and enrich the composition. While this is a fan-art of a character from a video game, so he had something to base the design choices off of, it is nonetheless important to take note of as these aspects enhance the overall composition and make it more interesting to look at. You’ll see a common trend through his other works where he has a broad sense for fashion as each character really does have quite radically different clothes; this does an immense service to the artist as it increases their awareness of design for characters but also helps practice different forms and how they manifest around the shapes of the human body. This is a powerful piece and one of Thaumazo’s best!

I notice that Thaumazo’s tends to give his characters the sort of facial expression that this piece has here. Beyond just adding some conjecture towards what I think the artist is thinking, I want to point-out how the facial expression should generally relate to the action in the scene. This is something that builds up a story element to the work and makes it more interesting. Even so, Thaumazo still does well with all the usual aspects of proportion and line, while adding some nice little touches here and there: the shining earring, headband, ‘beauty spot’ under the eye, the flow of her hair and the beaded arm-band. What stands out most to me is the brushes that show off the splashing water; this is done so well in this and really adds to the composition as a whole without making it too busy or flattening the image.

In this last piece, I chose this to have you see the raw aspect of how he uses line. You almost wouldn’t realize this was a digital work if it wasn’t for the tags! Maintaining the grit of the pencil lines does add that traditional semblance many people do desire, and it builds up implied texture. Thaumazo really displays the planes and minimal use of line, to where he doesn’t go over-board with how many lines there are and it feels very clean. This work is fantastic to use as a method of studying proper line use. God damn great Nier fan art too! :D

Please give your thoughts and appreciation to Thaumazo, his works are fantastic and I'm excited to see what more he creates this year :)
