Is Dropshipping Dead?

in art •  6 years ago

In this article, I will be answering the age-old question, or rather new question, Is Dropshipping dead?

Simple Answer: If you have half a brain, you would know that “NO!” it is in fact not dead. So you can go ahead and calm down.

If you want to make it in this business, don’t let stupid questions like this get you off.

Without further ado, let’s move on to the first section.

Shopify Dropshipping is not dead!

First of all, it is ignorant to think that this widely used business model is going to fizzle out entirely. It will change, but it will not die out.

And let me tell you why,

Proven business model

Dropshipping is one step away from doing exactly what every large manufacturer or distributor does.

A lot of well-known companies get a manufacturer to make their products, have it shipped out to their warehouse and then to their retail stores or customers.

Dropshipping does this but without having the item shipped to you first. You cut out the middle of yourself.

You can have the product shipped to you first, but that is a whole other business model.

Dropshipping is such a logical business model that there is no way it can die out.

Will people catch on to dropshipping?

This is a concern that a lot of people have, and it is that a lot of people is going to catch onto what dropshipping and Ali Express are.

And they are not entirely wrong.

Because everyday people who know about this strategy are growing. However, the number of people who know about this are largely outnumbered by the basic unaware consumer.

People don’t care enough to be made aware of how they are being sold their products.

Yes, they will get a bit picky with shipping times, especially as places like Amazon get even bigger and other websites hurry to catch up to the high standards that Amazon sets.

However, for the most part, people are not going to care.

Gurus instilling fear on you to make you buy courses

This is a very popular tactic that “gurus” have been trying out to instill fear and thus make people buy their courses and to see how to succeed with e-commerce. And boy, has it worked.

Just be clear, I am not knocking on these guys. Total props to them for running a business. But it is sensationalism that can be seen through with just a little bit of research.

If anything, Dropshipping will keep growing

Why wouldn’t it?

It is a very hands-off, passive income source which has always been of large interest to many types of people.

Who wouldn’t want to make large amounts of money doing a very minimum amount of work?

That is what everyone wants. That is the dream.

So people will naturally be drawn to this method and increase attention will thus lead to further advances.

You will see this in any industry, as more people converge in any type of industry they will want to get themselves ahead which in turn grows the industry as a whole, and it snowballs from there.

Death is still happening

This is in regards to a certain subsection in Dropshipping. That is Lazy Dropshipping

Low effort = Zero return

Making a very general store, not standing out from the crowd in any way and expecting sales to start rolling in is what a lot of people are doing.

So many stores of this nature exist and you need to do something different to stand out and create conversions (sales).

Creative strategies and tactics are required

Markets are always changing and so are people’s interests. You need to stay up-to-date and test many things, to see what people in your niche best respond to.

I have had my stores up and running for some time, and I am still making changes all the time.

Does not mean all niches are impenetrable

Do NOT get into this mindset.

“I have seen a lot of stores do that, so that means I can’t get into it”

That is quitter talk right there. If you can tackle a niche with a very professional store, you are instantly above 90% of other stores in that niche.

Spend several days, NOT several hours making the store look professional as possible, look for other stores that sell similar products to gain inspiration.

And you are instantly above the game.

Then what you have to do is run successful advertisements correctly, which once again people do not know how to do.

If you have already started dropshipping, and if it is not working for you, there are many possible reasons why. Here are a few

Why dropshipping is not working for you

  • You are taking a very cookie-cutter approach

There are a very high number of stores that just copy YouTube tutorials with proven hot selling products, and they are awful.

A countless number of people fall into the trap of copying what these tutorials tell them to do, with no variation, and expect to have sales, with products that have been sold over and over again.

That is crazy!

DO NOT FALL INTO THIS TRAP

You cannot expect to have success with a store that has been duplicated 500 times.

  • Your store looks like crap

Alternately, you may need to take some creative direction and do things differently. However, your store can still look horrible, even if you are creative.

Creativity does not equate to good design.

There is an entire science behind web design, and the best advice I can offer is to look at other popular websites, preferably in a new niche and see what they are doing.

-How are their product pictures?
-How are their product descriptions?
-How are they better?

When you dropship you are competing with many other people that sell that same product.

Ask yourself, why would they want to buy it off you instead of the 10 other stores selling the same exact thing?

  • No research

You put up a store, you don’t make sales and then you quit.

I lost $200 dollars before I made my first sale. If I had done more research beforehand, I could have cut this back, to almost nothing.

However, this was me starting out. This was mainly because I was testing out many different strategies with many different products, before finding one that worked and then worked up from that.

It is a very incremental process. You cannot jump into it and then just expect to make a $100 a day right off the bat.

What is the future like for dropshipping?

Not only will the number of Dropshipping stores increase, so will the quality of Dropshipping stores.

People will see the great success of dropshipping and hop on board, but quality will always be steadily increasing to compete with each other.

Of course, you are going to get the crappy stores throughout the history of Dropshipping. However, the general trend line is going to be steadily increasing.

Competition is going to drive this industry to a more respectable level because right now with the general stores, people don’t give enough attention to their website’s design.

Dropshipping is seen as a get-rich-quick scheme, that is really scam-ey, and gross, but if you do it right, you are not going to be lumped into these people at all.

Tweaking the idea of Dropshipping for the better

People will actually order a product to test for its quality, take better pictures and even ship from their home through self-fulfillment.

This is not really dropshipping, but that is where this game is heading towards.

Additionally, getting in contact with suppliers, customizing products to diversify and enhance what is being sold.

This is a fantastic move which I hope catches on.

Probably the biggest reason why dropshipping isn’t going to die is because….

RETAIL, IS DYING

More and more people are turning towards the internet every day for their shopping needs, and we’re here to scratch that itch.

So these are my thoughts on why dropshipping isn’t going anywhere.
