Hypertension is the medical definition of a disease where the blood pressure against the artery walls is too high. This condition can cause various health complications that can be life threatening if left unchecked. In fact, this disorder can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and death. Usually hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Over time, if left untreated, it can lead to health problems, such as heart disease and stroke. A healthy diet with less salt, regular exercise, and taking medication can help lower blood pressure. The mechanism of hypertension is through the formation of angiotensin II from angiotensin I by Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE). ACE plays an important physiological role in regulating blood pressure. Blood contains angiotensinogen which is prodoxylated in the liver.
