my first passport photo - 1961

Born in 1944 in Felixdorf, Lower Austria, I lived and was educated in Vienna, where later I worked as a clerk in the Transport and Insurance Business. After completing service in the Austrian Air Force, I traveled throughout Europe, eventually settling in Stockholm, Sweden.

When I was a child, my grandfather, a very scholarly and educated man who loved art and rare books, took me to exhibitions in Vienna. Some of those were of the young artists of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. There was no TV or any other distractions back then: when I visited my grandfather, he always had a stack of paper and sharpened pencils ready for me. I already then entered into my solitary dream world building my own little universe in the drawings I then produced.
Artists I’ve seen these days were Helmut Leherb, Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner and others I only recognized by name later, when I began my research.

I would go to the Akademie der Bildenden Künste and walk the halls of the Art Collection, but also peeked into the studios and watched.
Later on, I would go to the Akademie der Bildenden Künste and walk the halls of the Art Collection, but also peeked into the studios and watched. I could stand quietly for hours absorbing how a student would copy an old master in the gallery.

In the Austrian Air Force, around 1962 - during that time, I was married, but away from home. Coming back, the marriage didn't last long.

Otto Rapp - first marriage
Here I am, getting married for the first time, 1961 - it lasted less than a year. Heartbroken I left Vienna, following an invitation by a friend who had gone to Sweden a year earlier, and he secured a job for me. "There are plenty of beautiful women in Sweden, come join us here" he said.

This is about the only picture I have from my time in Sweden. I had lost a computer and a hard drive with many old photos. ►

I lived and worked in Stockholm, Sweden for about 4 years. Traveling around in 1968, I wound up in Western Canada where I eventually settled in Lethbridge, Alberta. The following year, I started to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Otto Rapp I was working as a Yardman switching trains in the CPR yards in Lethbridge. Later I became Yard Foreman, and once interchangeable seniority was established, I went on the road as a Brakeman and Conductor.

derailed Locomotive After quitting in 1977 to attend the University of Lethbridge Art Department, I again returned to the Railway in 1982, at first as a Freight Conductor, but then after a lay-off I took on a job as a Engine Attendant and later as a Carman in the Lethbridge Mechanical Department, and then for my last few years, I was the Co-Chair of the Mechanical Department Safety Committee (overseeing safe operations, like in this Safety Video). My work with the Safety Committee included writing Job Safety Analysis to establish safe work practices, as well as accident and incident investigations, such as at derailments - a dramatic picture like this one above of a derailed locomotive

In between my years with the Railway, I studied art at the University of Lethbridge from 1977 to 1982.

In Canada, I got married for the second time. My wife was Mary-Jane, a full-blooded Cree Native. We stayed together for over 15 years. We split up in 1988, and tragically I found out only months later from my son, she passed away in 2009.

Following the divorce, and later after a disastrous third marriage that lasted 3 years too long, I stayed single for a while. In that time, I also visited Hawaii several times, and bevor getting married again, here are some photos - the last one from 1995:

I had some great times in Hawaii, unfortunately most of the analog photos are lost. They were scanned and on an external hard drive, but it crashed.

The next Chapter - my fourth marriage

It was around 1995, after returning from Hawaii, that I met Christan. At that time I didn't think it would last very long, dating off and on, but eventually we stuck together. It was to last for 15 years until we separated in 2009. We are still in frequent contact with one another, more like friends now than partners.

Returning to Austria

After my mother passed away in 2010, I went to the funeral in February. I inherited her apartment, then returned with my son Otti for the Summer, staying 3 months. Returning to Canada again I asked myself: 'why am I freezing my nuts off in this harsh Canadian Winter?' After all, I spent the better part of 40 years working for the Railway, frequently outside at sometimes brutal temperatures. I retired in 2006, and separated from Christan in 2009, so there was no reason for me anymore to stay. Subsequently I moved permanently to Vienna in 2011. My son did not want to come with me that time, so he stayed behind with Christan.

In Vienna, I rented studio space at the Palais Palffy - where Ernst Fuchs also had a studio. We met often there as well as downstairs at the cafe.

This was at a birthday party for Ernst Fuchs at the Cafe Palffy

I made many friends and new connections here in Vienna, and became also very busy creating art. This time here is probably the best time I had for a long time. I always missed Vienna, and now that I am here, I know that there was always something missing all these years. My roots are here - and I had always retained my Austrian citizenship because I felt that eventually, I would come back.

Enjoyed reading and thinking, I have two more marriages to catch your score :) Nice meeting you in this way @thermoplastic.

there is still time, haha - but for myself, I am done!
I usually say the first and third don't count: first was too short and a juvenile stupidity on both our parts, and the third an insane rebound that I rather forget. My second and my last one are the ones that count. They both lasted for about 15 years, and from both I have sons, a generation apart, sort of, since my grandson is the same age as my younger son. I am still in friendly contact with my last wife - in fact, we are not divorced, but separated since 2009.

I was joking off course @thermoplastic :) I believe people don't have to be alone, we are just not meant to be ..But, no more rings for me, that's what I know now :)))
It's nice to stay friend with people we shared something so intimate as life...happy are those who can.
We have one expression here I like defining do you know someone or don't
'' You know person when you share -eat - sack of salt with him...'' - meaning how long time you need to live with someone...

Erika

That's what I call an eventful life. For some reason, I felt reminded of books and films (LOL) because your text could be useful for one or the other. The photo gallery contributes to this. My goodness, what a handsome young man you were. I hope that doesn't make you nostalgic.

I like the fact that you had so many different professions and didn't make a direct career in art. Too many people want to be artists, but they are not, and then it somehow seems bloodless. But I don't want to complain.

I was honestly concerned when I read about the death of your first wife. I have no knowledge of their people and would like to know more about them. Do you have any suggestions for reading or something like that?

You shouldn't get married again anyway: -) I hope that despite the patchwork you have a close connection to your children. Anyway, this is what it looks like and I really like to see such family photos.

All the best for you & congratulations on this epic article, which has been really a lot of work.
Erika

Thank you for your thoughts.
I put a short essay together on my website, dealing with "The Circle of the Sun" that talks also a bit about my background and connection to the Natives:
https://www.artofthemystic.com/circle-of-the-sun.html
About films of Fist Nation Natives: this full contemporary movie on YouTube is about Natives on the other end of Canada, but it is similar as it is in the West where I lived:

A Wikipedia article about the movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_Me_Outside
A romantic movie about Natives is "A Man Called Horse": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Man_Called_Horse_(film)
video on Daily Motion: http://dai.ly/x2ycqat
also to recommend: "Little Big Man": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Big_Man
video on Daily Motion: http://dai.ly/x3mnrp8
Much of the location where Little Big Man was filmed is roughly from the area where I lived.
The Indian Chief Dan George https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Dan_George (playing "grandfather") was actually a famous actor from the Pacific North-West, their traditions and costumes are different from the Plains Indians.
A little bit of background for Indigenous Peoples of Canada: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples_in_Canada
Try this for a map of tribes as they existed before Europeans came to North America:

Thank you very much for that. That's a beautiful treasure trove you've prepared for me there. I will deal with it in due course and look at it calmly. My list grows. :)

Would you say that this culture has also shaped your art? It appears to me it has.

addendum: I just found this meme, and thought you might find it interesting:

well-thats-the-last-time-i-trust-a-pilgrim-i-swear_o_3308033.jpg

You lived a life. Hope you have many years more so you can keep blowing my mind with your art work.

Thank you - that is the plan. I got so many projects in queue I will have to live another lifetime, lol

HI Otto, really enjoyed this post. I had heard a large part of it from you before but it really helps to get a better pic by having the images! ;-)

Thank you @romanie - but there would still be a lot of gaps to fill.

Oh I love it!! Thanks a lot for this interesting and entertaining look at your life you granted us here!

Are you inviting anyone?

was I supposed to? I wrote on top: Everyone can participate.

No no, that's only a suggestion, as some people are more likely to participate, when they get "poked" ;-)

I barely can get anyone to read (or vote for) my posts, let alone someone would notice I poked them - how would they know I named them if they don't read my posts? This isn't Facebook where you get notified (to the point of annoyance, I might add).
Judging by how this post performs, I might just take a leave of absence. I spent the better part of yesterday putting this together, when I could have caught up to some things instead that actually matter.

Ah geh Otto! 48 Views!

Will niemand sagen, was er machen soll.

Oh yes, BTW, catching up to things: I spent a few hours this morning to fix the VAG page of Wolfgang Widmoser:
https://www.vagallery.com/wolfgang-widmoser.html

WOW, starke Seite!!

This fills in a few blank spots. Thanks for the insight. I'm enjoying getting to know you.

thanks - it is catharsis for me, in a way - there is much more, but my most recent times here in Austria are well known to my friends, so I just filled in the blanks about my past.

that was fun. Yup your mom was right: what a cute baby!!!

haha - well, I just wonder what happened since then 🤣 - and no, I am not soliciting any more compliments, thanks 😘

I let myself into your inner universe through the many eyes in your drawings. I can see how you worked your way through four women....there is a LOT of you at play in the garden of fernal delights ...
Your modal and cashmere silk scarves/shawls are actually very wearable!

I chose this one, because my first partner was massively into decalcomania. Our whole flat was covered in it in no time. But no, I was a LOT of woman, not she (she did get me hooked on Dalí though).

wow - you surfed my designer shop! I do that at times when I feel playful. But my main interest is painting and drawing. But the designs are all derived from details of my paintings, digitally worked in photoshop.

Yep, surfed the whole LOT.

Sólo conocía a Ernst, Dalí y Magritte.

You might want to read my essay about the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, published here: https://www.vagallery.com/the-vienna-school-of-fantastic-realism.html

Great to know you and great videos down there. i love to stare at thik syle of paintings for a bit of time :))

are you talking about the link to a YT Security video? I did not post any videos in this blog.

Yes, I was talking about your post about few days back ''MY VIDEOS ABOUT ART AND THE VISIONARY ART COMMUNITY''...sorry about the confusion!

oh yeah, cool - glad you watched them - some are rather long. I had produces short previews as well, but in this post, I only put the full length ones in. The short ones were for the short attention span folks on Facebook 😉
