Nicole Rowe: Artist Statement: My fascination with mental disorders started at a young age of eighteen when I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Ever since then my curiosity has expanded to such an extent that I thoroughly researched seven mental disorders in quite some depth. I have created fourteen artworks of which all of them consist of glass as the prominent medium. The glass is combined with other mediums like aluminium, acrylic paint, ink, thread, nails, digital prints, transparencies and vinyl. What makes me unique is the fact that I love working with glass but I can't do glass blowing or kiln work. So I have resorted to using different types of glass sheets which I bought just like that off the shelf as an alternative. This alternative has become my main signature in my artworks. My motivation for creating these diverse artworks is to diminish stigma which causes unnecessary segregation. I am trying to enlighten the public on the facts of mental disorders. At the same time I'm celebrating the complexity and diversity of the human mind by portraying it not as right or wrong, healthy or damaged, but as beautiful in it's uniqueness in each person.
