What is "asl" refer to on TikTok?

A lot of people aren't aware that an abbreviation "ASL" means American Sign Language. However, people on social media have used the abbreviation in a different way and writing it with the lowercase alphabet.

Abbreviation "asl" means "as heck," that you'll likely notice appearing across the social media platforms TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram.

One example is that a Twitter users wrote "I am up and hungry in the morning."

Another user commented, "I gotta be getting old because each when I receive an iOS update notification, I think "Is there another one?" I used to be elated at the time when updates would be released."

Although some have incorporated the slang into everyday terms but not everyone is well-versed in the term used in pop culture.

"'Asl is now a synonym for "as hell" is really throwing my young brain into a spiral," one person tweeted. A different person commented, "I just wanna know... who thought that asl .... meant "as hell" to .... to make sense? ..."

A third person wrote "Who is the f--k using "asl" to shorten for "as hell"? I'm old (as f--k) because it means something different for me."

Some Twitter users pointed out that "asl" could also mean "age and sex, as well as location." It appears, however, that Gen Z is redefining the abbreviation and using it to refer to "as heck."

Another well-known TikTok phrase that is employed is cheugy.

There is a flurry of slang words since TikTok's popularity increased in the year 2020. There are likely to be children or even teens making use of new words in their daily vocabulary. If you're a frequent user of TikTok you've probably heard someone talk or write the word "cheugy" in a video.

So, what exactly does the latest buzzword that Gen Z just can't seem to get enough of these days have to do with it?

As per Urban Dictionary, cheugy is "the opposite of trendy" and is "used to describe someone who is still following these outdated fashions. This can include but not be restricted to fashion, lifestyles on social media, use of slang, etc."

In a sense it's similar to calling someone simple.

The user of TikTok Hallie Cain created a video that defined the term cheugy on the 30th of March. In the video she gave some examples of what it means to become "cheugy."

"Graphic T-shirts and hats, words on clothing and accessories, which are cheugy" she wrote. The TikTok user then went on to give different examples of ways that a person, or a fashion trend might be considered to be cheugy.
