Comet 46P Wirtanen

in astronomy •  6 years ago

I got to do a little stargazing last night and was able to get a good look at Comet 46P Wirtanen. It's not much to see, but it is the brightest comet we have had this year and is visible to the naked eye. The star cluster in the upper left of the photo is the Pleiades.

46P Wirtanen is a small comet that goes around the sun every 5.4 years and is currently streaking past Earth at 21,251 miles per hour. 46P is a designator that means it is the 46th periodic comet discovered around our sun in the last 200 years. It was discovered by Carl Wirtanen in 1948. It will be at its closest point to us on Sunday, and will be easily visible to the naked eye.
