Practicing night sky photographysteemCreated with Sketch.

With the lunar eclipse coming up this Sunday (thanks for the tip @bengy), I thought I should practice getting some night sky photos with my new camera, a Nikon Coolpix B500. It's a beginner's camera, so it's a far cry from deep space photography, but it's a little better than what I have been able to do with my cell phone alone.

Here are some photos that I took from my driveway last night. You can click on any of them for a full sized view.

The moon at 40x magnification

And here it is hiding behind some tree branches..

Orion and Sirius at 1x Zoom

Orion is the sort-of X shaped constellation in the center of the picture, Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. It's framed by the tree branches in the lower left quadrant, about 1/3 of the way in from the left and 1/3 of the way up from the bottom.

Orion's belt sort-of points to it.

That's it from last night, along with a bunch of others that did not come out very well. I haven't managed to get any decent pictures of identifiable stars at higher than 1x zoom, so that's still on my to-do list.

Thank you for your time and attention.
