The Lobsters Have Left the Building

This is my entry to the Abandoned Shit Weekly Contest. The theme for this week is black and white.

I live in a very, very remote fishing village in Belize. Tours to see the Howler Monkeys are essentially the only other source of income for most of the villagers. Of course lobsters aren't really fish, but they make up a significant portion of most fishermen's income. As a result of over harvesting, lobsters can only be caught during lobster season, which ended mid February. These are the abandoned lobster traps pulled up from the sea floor.

They are made from a special kind of wood that can sit in salt water and not totally and completely fall apart. You can see above where there were barnacles attached.

In a poor country like Belize, nothing is ever permanently abandoned. When lobster season starts up again, what can be salvaged from these will be salvaged to make new ones.

The hole on the top is where the lobster falls in. Apparently lobsters like cow skin, so the fishermen/lobstermen put some in the trap. The lobsters crawl in going for a tasty snack. I'm not sure if they are physically incapable of getting out or just not smart enough, but they are stuck in there until they get pulled out and sold.

There are hundreds of them piled up on the beaches. We have way more lobster traps than people here.
