Audi A1 Bluetooth Speakerphone Upgrade / ENGLISH

in audi •  6 years ago  (edited)

Hello all,

As I am not the only one who wants to upgrade their Audi A1 with an original Bluetooth speakerphone, I decided to post here a short tutorial. There is also a video link below. Up to now it's only in German language but I will try to make it in English as well.

Let's start with the tutorial.

You need the following parts:

  • MMI 3G Nav+ Radio (Part number 8XA 032 192 C)
  • CAN Gateway/CAN to MOST (Part number 8X0 907 468 A)
  • Optical fibre cable
  • Diagnostic Tool (eg. VCDS)
  • Mounting tools

I bought the radio on eBay for 260€, the Gateway for 60 € on eBay and the optical fibre for ~10 € on Alibaba. The replaced parts I sold again on eBay to the same price than I bought the new one. Therefore the upgrade was more ore less for free, instead of my spare time of course.

I recommend to disconnect the battery during the whole installation phase!

Step 1:
For security reason you should save the original data of ECU 56 (Radio), diagnostic protocol, etc. in order to have a backup if something goes wrong.

Step 2:
You need to disassemble the original Radio. I highly recommend to use appropriate tooling. The de-mounting tool need to be inserted in the openings of the Radio and you need to pull on the bottom side of the Radio. Afterwards remove all connectors and cables from the Radio.

Step 3:
Remove the door panelling on the driver side (left side). I reommend to use a screwdrive and a soft towel. Afterwards the panel in the legroom needs to be removed. For that you only need to pull strongly to the bottom.

Step 4:
As a next step we are going to replace the CAN Gateway. It is located in the legroom. It's not screwed. Only push strongly in the motor direction until it releases. Remove the connector.

Step 5:
The fibre cable need to be installed. There should be enough space for that. It's connected from the Radio to the CAN Gateway. Take care: Do not bend the cable. Otherwise it's defect. Try to use wide radii. I used a 1m long cable which was enough.

Step 6:
Install the new CAN Gateway (8X0 907 468 A) connect it to the original cable. Connect also the optical fibre cable.

Step 7:
Connect the new radio (8XA 032 192 C) with the original connector and install it

Step 8:
Connect the Battier and make a functional check. You should see "SAFE CP" in the speedometer display and the tire pressure light is flashing. Also in the MMI display you should see "Some functions of the infotainment system are currently unavailable". Also Radio and other MMI functions are not working now.

Step 9:
Now you need to remove the component protection of all new installed parts. That's up to now only possible at AUDI workshop. They are doing an online request if the parts you installed are stolen or not. It takes ~5-10min a costs ~50 €..

Step 10:
Connect your mobile phone via bluetooth and be happy.
