Expert predicts far-right to win Austrian presidential election

Around 15% of Austrian swing voters are still undecided about who they will support in the presidential election re-run taking place in October.

Norbert Hofer, far-right Freedom Party

Norbert Hofer, from the far-right Freedom Party, was narrowly beaten in May by the independent candidate Alexander van der Bellen, but the election was recalled after a court found discrepancies in the counting of votes.

Wolfgang Bachmayer, head of research group OGM believes that far-right Norbert Hofer will come first on the day due to "the ongoing and intensifying refugee discussions".

Brexit, Austria, and the EU

Following the UK's decision to leave the European Union, however, the EU rather than refugees has been one of the main debating points between the candidates this summer.

Historically EU-sceptics, Norbert Hofer's Freedom Party generally support the idea that Austria should get to vote on its membership.
