CAR MAINTENANCE TIP : Learn these few things and save big $

in automotive •  7 years ago

When you go to a lot of quick lubes they always try to up sell you on a number things. Some you may need but some you won't. If you take a look in you car manual there will be a maintenance schedule that says when and how often things should be done. Get familiar with it especially before heading out to get your oil changed.

The tech may tell you your fluid is burned or doesn't look good and needs to be changed. (They do this for a variety of fluids) The correct way to change fluids is by regular service intervals. If you let the tech change the fluid chances are the fluid will look similar and smell about the same after the service is done.

One other big tip I can offer today is DO NOT FALL FOR THE "SEVERE DRIVING CONDITIONS" QUOTE. The tech may tell you that your book says to change things at one time, but you need to do it more often because of where you live.
NOT TRUE. In Chicago they say it is the extreme Winters, In Phoenix it is the extreme Summers. When you think about it just about every place has a so called extreme climate.

Just follow your manufactures maintenance section in your car will thank you and so will your pocket book!

Good tip!
We do our own car maintenance, both to save money, and to avoid being cheated like this.
(Also to avoid mistakes made my mechanics either not knowing their job, or not paying attention...)
Definitely read the manuals and do what the maintenance schedule says!
Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the informative post. I do go to those speedy lube places and they always try to upsell me but I never take them up on it as I have a regular mechanic that I trust and the next time my car has a tune up or other repair I ask him if what the lube shop suggested is necessary. Thanks for the tips. Keep sharing....appreciate.
