Autumnal Harvests

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the next best time is today.” I planted these Carpathian English Walnuts about 7-8 years ago, and now they have given me over 25-30 pounds of beautiful walnuts so far this year. My cats think this is a game, harvesting walnuts, as I shake limbs and it rains these brown, thumping clusters of fat and protein. Leaves are crinkling down the street, and a wind chime hums. The sweet fermenting aroma of walnut husks comes from the bucket I’m collecting for 18th century clothing dye. It’s good to be alive. Do what you love. Embrace moments as these, even if alone. #harvestseason #harvest #fall #autumn #autumnal

Sustenance yielded by the relationship of soil, water, sun and air. By planting these English Walnut trees nearly a decade ago, this year is my first large and measurable crop yield. Last year was a mere bowl full and I saved most for re planting. It’s hard to describe the exact feeling of the buttery sharp taste of a large Walnut, you planted, nurtured, touched, checked on, pruned, essentially live with, harvested and dried. There are those who will never gleam nutrition by the sweat of their own brow, nor will they taste foods born of calloused hands. This is the wealth not measured in accounts or by numbers associated with papers featuring the faces of dead men. This is wealth eternal, a man and his trees. #trees #growthings #food #growyourown #selfsufficient #carpathianenglishwalnut #englishwalnut

Love the quote! So true. Clothing dye? Does it make for a green dye then?

Brown to dark.
