NYC Snow Tomorrow Changes To Mix Then Rain Overnight

Good morning everyone. We have clouds socked in this morning which will eventually give way to some sunshine, but it won't last long as our next system approached tomorrow. We're also still keeping an eye on the slight chance of a White Christmas, with a possible coastal storm prior to Christmas Eve.

Look for a cloudy morning, then slowly increasing sunshine today. The winds will howl, with gusts in the 35mph range at times. This will nullify our upper 40's today, and make it feel much colder than it is.

Clouds will begin to increase by dawn tomorrow, and precipitation will start moving in between late morning and mid afternoon. We'll start off with some snow, but with the precip light in nature and temps in the mid to upper 30's, expect little to no accumulation. Most of the whitening will occur on colder surfaces, such as cars, grass, trees, and deck surfaces.

When the main area of precip heads in with low pressure coming in from the west, warmer area in the atmosphere will cut off the snow even though we'll remain in the 30's. We should have rain mixing with snow by evening, then all rain overnight. Areas upstate will hold onto the cold air in the lower layers of the atmosphere, and they'll have a prolonged period of snow and ice.

Some areas well north of the NYC area, will see all snow or mostly snow out of this. They should be the ones coming on with a 2-4/3-6" type accumulation.  For here though, this is not our storm and don't expect much.

Rain continues into Tuesday, and the steadiest rain should quit by early morning, with showery conditions taking over till afternoon. Highs in the low 40's.

The cold returns on Wednesday and Thursday, and we may struggle getting out of the mid 30's.

Colder than average air remains locked on on Friday, then we go chilly over the weekend with low 40's. That chilly air sticking around may play a role with a coastal system possibly heading in Sunday night into Monday morning. The timing and path are still uncertain, but if everything works out "right" it could be enough to give us some snow on the ground for Christmas Eve/Christmas Day.

This is something I've been watching for several days now, and we have a long way to go. At a minimum, I think the Carolina's get affected by this system; then we'll have to see if it scoots out to our south and out to sea, or tries to head up.

MANY THANKS TO TROPICAL TIDBITS FOR THE USE OF MAPS

Please note that with regards to any tropical storms or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
