VFX pioneer James Cameron is once again trying to raise the bar when it comes to the visual experience of a film. He announced that his team of engineers at Lightstorm Entertainment and he are working on a new technology that might bring the 3d experience to theaters without the need of 3d glasses.
“I'm going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range and high frame rates — the things we are working toward. I’m still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen — with no glasses. We’ll get there.”- said Cameron
His team, working alongside Christie Digital have created a laser system that has the ability to use 60,000 lumens to provide bright images at incredibly high frame rates that are essential to create the 3d experience. While nowadays films tend to keep the picture rather dimmed and stay around 30 frames per second to achieve what they call a "cinematic feel", Cameron is completely steering away from that, in the opposite direction. He wants to push the boundaries and really take his audience on a beautiful, bright, and colorful journey with his film. After all, he's not going for that "cinematic feel" but rather that "holy crap this looks so real feel". How exactly he is going to achieve that without using 3d glasses is still something hidden way up his sleeve, and we can't wait to see it.
Avatar 2 is set to hit the theaters in December of 2020 and will be followed by Avatar 3, 4, and 5!
