What is Hypothyroidism?
It is also called the Underactive disease condition in which the thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone. Thyroid gland is found in the lower part of neck and produces the two hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The main function of this gland is to run the body’s metabolism. Reduced level of thyroid hormones cause the impairment of metabolic functions of the body. It also decreases the body processes as a result letting the body make less energy and leaving it sluggish.
What are the Causes of Hypothyroidism?
There can be a number of causes that result in hypothyroidism such as autoimmune diseases, hyperthyroidism treatment, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery and some drugs.
The most common cause is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Thyroiditis means inflammation of thyroid gland. It is autoimmune disorder in which body produce antibodies that attack on thyroid gland. It may be due to any viral infection.
