It was an incident on a train in South Africa that gave Gandhi’s journey its direction.
On June 7 1893, Mahatma Gandhi was asked to get out of a train in South Africa – an act that initiated his lifelong battle for equality, human dignity and India’s freedom.
Perhaps it is that beginning on a train which is commemorated by a stunning 81-feet mural on Churchgate Station in Mumbai, depicting Gandhi at the door of a train. His train journeys across India were, of course, legendary.
It offers bird-eye views of Churchgate station not available from the street. The mural was created by the Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra.
In 2016, 36 railway stations in Mumbai were beautified in a citizens’ initiative. The project was titled Hamara Station, Hamari Shaan, which had groups of volunteers come together to paint the walls, foot overbridges and platforms of railway stations.
