Barclays Bankers Charged With Fraud

Key executives at Barclays have been charged with fraud relating to the financial crisis in 2008 and their methods of raising capital to avoid nationalisation as reported by the Guardian.

So where did it begin?
During the financial crash of 2008 privatised banks were being given taxpayer cash in order to bring them from the brink of bankruptcy, in exchange for this the banks would have oversight from their national government (the government would be shareholders). Barclays did not want this (I think we know why) and scrambled to find investors who were willing to pour money into the bank.

One of those multiple investors were located from Qatar - to the tune of £12 billion. Barclays had in effect committed acts of money laundering by having the money injected into the bank and then be relocated back to Qatar, in other words "money movement".

If convicted as claimed by the SFO then each executive could land themselves 10 years in prison - this is on top of the £50 million fine which the SFO has imposed upon Barclays.
