On the Bench Today - Beading Satin Headbands

in beadwork •  7 years ago

These are very simple to bead, and little girls love them (and big girls too :)

I remember getting one every year from my grandmother, and it would be my favorite all year.

The old way to make them would be with a steamed and bent boning (made from bone), wrap with leather and then bead. They were also made with Baleen back in the day, some carved, some covered.

Today we get satin covered headbands and just add beads.

So to begin, I thread the needle with waxed thread and knot it. Come in from the back of the band and thread around to the starting point on the front. I tend to start the beads about 3/4 of an inch up so they are not pressing on the ear.

I also like to use 7 - 9 beads...for various reasons, the main being that they are enough to add colour, and not enough to get caught on things.

Once the beads are on the thread, slide them down to lay on the band...and the needle goes into the fabric right where the beads end. The distance between bead sections is entirely subjective, we just want fairly even spacing.

Then continue around the band the same way...

Once at the other end (leaving the same length of space as the beginning), run the thread around to the back and tie off. I like to run the thread through the fabric after knotting to hide the tail before snipping it.

That is all there is to it :) If you try these have fun!
