That was a really cool article. Hopefully I'll remember it if I ever chance upon a bear. Have you read about prairie dog communication? They have specific phrases they use for different predators. Crows also have a pretty sophisticated way of communicating with each other. I think animals are a lot more complex and intelligent than we like to acknowledge.
If you haven't already seen it, you might enjoy "Grizzly Man." It's a great documentary on human and bear interaction, although it's sad at the end.
