The first recorded indoor ice hockey game was organized in Montreal, Canada on March 3, 1875

The game was organized by James Creighton, a Canadian lawyer, engineer, journalist and athlete. Creighton grew up in Nova Scotia where shinny, an informal type of ice hockey was played. He popularized and formalized ice hockey in Montreal and later in Ottawa where he served as a law clerk to the Canadian Senate for 48 years.

I remember playing shinny as a kid, too. The Finnish term for the game is pihajääkiekko (literally yard ice hockey). It can be played anywhere with a puck or a tennis ball. We often played it with a tennis ball on the street next to our homes (obviously without skates) or in skating areas in parks (with skates). It was great fun. It didn't make any difference how skillful you were. Often, we didn't even keep score which is the spirit of shinny.

I wonder how did he come up with playing ice hockey indoors. Did he just think one day to himself "Hmm I think I'm going to freeze this floor right now" or what :D

The game was played in the Victoria Skating Rink that was an indoor skating rink on natural ice. It was used for skating, ice hockey and theatrical performances. My guess is that the ice hockey community grew large enough for them to be able to pay for paying in the Victoria Skating Rink, which they wanted to do because it allowed them to play even when the weather was shit outdoors. Playing outdoors can suck if it's too cold or if it's snowing heavily.

LOL

Ho-ho-ho, you have got a great neat moustache sir I must say.
Even I am a bit jealous. Because my moustache grows not from where it should.

Woow, I came know about ice hockey when I moved to Finland , in india we play normal hockey( national game ) since we don’t have ice there unless someone goes all the north to Himalayas mountain range 😅

We do not have any snow. I remember playing as a kid with roller skates I wish I had known that skates were not obligatory, anyway someone appeared with 2 hockey sticks but we didn't have a small ball of any kind we used a football, I fall so much that I never wanted to play again, I didn't know that it was called shinny for me it was hockey.

Hahah, where I grew up, we only play soccer on the street or ping pong. I miss those days. :(. Ice hockey isnt a ,mainstream game where i grew up.

When I was growing up we lived in a row house apartment. There was a community table tennis set. I and many other kids used to play table tennis all summer.

Amazing ! I just found out that we have ice-hockey association in Thailand since 1989! It was set up by someone who studied in the US and played ice-hockey.

Cheers.

Wow, I didn't know they played ice hockey in Thailand, too. What better way is there to spend an afternoon but to play a game of hockey and relax in the sun by the poolside afterwards.

In the year 1992 in Venezuela there was a big uproar because the Rollerblade famous roller skates became known, I remember that with my salary I was able to buy some skates I fell a lot but many times until I learned to skid and stand out in speed in fact I have a third place in national speed competition in skates, the story is that after learning to skate well and compete and overcome that stage because I started playing hockey, haha there do not get far but I can tell you I loved playing it
