Stillwater Artisanal's Super Hop NEIPA Review

in beer •  7 years ago  (edited)

Stillwater Artisanal is a "gypsy" brewery. The brewery, owned and operated by brew-master and previous electronica DJ Brian Strumke, does not own a facility. Brian travels, utilizing extra capacity at breweries across the world to produce his beers, and Brooklyn, NY-based Twelve Percent Imports distributes them worldwide. I won't go into further detail on the brewery itself in this article, but there will be a link to their site below which I recommend checking out purely because I found it aesthetically interesting.

Without further ado here is the beer.

This beer really has a peachy glow to it, the medium sized bubbles reflect a low-moderate carbonation.

Aroma:
The aroma is fresh peaches and pineapple with a some slight sweetness. I expect this beer would have a even stronger aroma had I drank it within a month of it being brewed.

Flavor:
Pretty good! One of the better examples of NEIPA i've tried. I always expect the NEIPA's up north to be a home run whenever I get my hands on a can or two but that is definitely not always the case. Ripe peaches, cream, and pineapple dominate this beer.

Mouthfeel:
Pillowy and soft, this beer definitely adheres to the NEIPA style in its water chemistry, favoring chlorides over sulfates to give it a really rounded mouthfeel.

Overall this is a great beer. Many people are attempting the NEIPA style, bringing a host of commercial examples to try. This example holds true to style. I have heard very mixed reviews of Stillwater and I'm glad my first experience was positive. I did not appreciate the amount of sediment in the can haha, but this is almost unavoidable with this style due to the amount of hops required and the low flocculation yeast strains used.
