WARNING: PERSONAL OPINION!

”The best beer is that one, which is in your hand!”

Definitely, that’s not the case this time... This one is for sure the best beer ever! The greatest invention of the human kind! Her majesty, Pilsner Urquell.

The word here are meaningless. Only one, who had drunk this beer know what I’m talking about.
First quality malts, noble hops, boquet of aromas and tastes. Bitter... and sweet in the right next moment. The experts are said to distinguish up to 300 different flavors in this beer. Absolutely this beer tells stories! Stories for life, eternity, perfection.

”You don’t drink Pilsner Urquell. You bite it!”

I even like the fact, that the can opener is stamped with Pilsner’s most famous spot - The distinctive gateway to Plzensky Prazdroj.

This beer begs to be drunk in one sip! And the gateway to Plzensky Prazdroj urges you to have another Urquell, as soon as you finish your glass. That’s how refreshing the beer is. Makes you to want more, and more, and more... and...

Golden color, perfect clarity, explosive hop aromas! The Saaz hops just tastes like heaven. Nothing to be compared with... really! Look at these bubbles:

I can write tons of superlatives about this one, but I do not want to be bothering. I’ll stop for now and let your imagination finish my stories. I’ll just let a bunch of more photos to jump in(the post).

I just have a question for all of you... it’s been discussed maybe a lot of times, but let me know your point of view:
Do you prefer canned beers, or do you like canned ones? Is it true, that cans preserve beer aromas and flavors in a better manner and why?

Cheers.

P.S.: This one finished faster than all the other beers, that I drink, and that I have ever drunk!

P.S. #2: That beer is the reason to want so desperately to go in Pilsen. And of course try the unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell!!!

I am so going to try to find that beer. It looks amazing.

Personally, I prefer beer from a glass bottle or straight from the keg. I don’t like canned beer much. And try to avoid it.

But considering that no light goes into the can at all, it theoretically is better preserved than the bottled one.
Of course kegged one rocks!

That’s true. Glass just seems cleaner to me for some reason.

Glass is inferior for a few reasons.

  1. As @mdosev said, no light so you will never have a skunked beer.
  2. The beer never touches aluminum because the cans are lined with plastic.
  3. Cans are much more airtight than bottles. No new oxygen is getting into that can whereas those crowns on bottles can be tenuous.
  4. Cans have less headspace than bottles. At thetime of canning there is less oportunity for oxygen to get into the can. But look at a bottle, you really have to trust your brewer to know they are bottling properly to keep O2 out of the headspace.
  5. They are light weight and thus more can be transported on a truck, making it better for the environment.
  6. Cans are more likely to be recycled.

Bottles are better than cans in a few ways though:

  1. Bottles are not lined with as much plastic (there is a little but of plastic in the crown).
  2. Bottles are inert and manufactured from easily found materials.
  3. Bauxite mining (aluminum) is terrible for the environment in which it is mined.

Yes, I'd say from an environmental standpoint that glass will always be better.

Those are interesting points for the quality of the beer though. I'd never really considered that. The feeling of drinking straight from the can is not ideal for me, which is how these beers after often served in Australia. And it's actually more common for a cheap beer to be sold in a can rather than the quality beer brands and craft beers which is served in glass and sold in bottles.

Yeah, in the US some of our best IPAs are in a can now.

I almost never drink anything straight from the vessel, it always goes into a glass and I ask for one if not provided.

As for environmental impact, there are a few things we have to weigh. Despite bauxite mining, aluminum might be a little better. It's lighter weight so you can ship more per square meter. You actually can't fill most trucks with bottles because they are too heavy. If you think about the entire supply chain for cans and bottles from raw materials to arriving in your hand, aluminum will have lower carbon emissions than glass.

That sounds like an interesting study to undertake. I wonder if cans would come out better?

I’ll do some digging when I have some time to find out. :)

The unfiltered Pilsner Urquel is really good. They flew some into San Francisco for a special event (twice).

Other Czech Pilsners might taste different though. Urquel is know for it's noticeable amounts of diacetyl, which is usually considered a flaw. But because Urquell consistently has the exact same product with the same amounts of diacetyl in each brew, then it's considered quality. And what's not to like about buttered popcorn! 🍿🍺

You have the point!
