Beer Review for BeerSaturday: Point Squash Ale

Desperate times.

My wife left me. No, really, she did. Probably because of this:

Backstory

The wife (@morodiene) and I normally spend the summer in Wisconsin, but we live in Florida the rest of the year. This summer, she had to head back early to start teaching, leaving me in Wisconsin. Alone.

So I've been working on my motorhome some more when I have time.

Last time we went camping a couple weeks ago, I noticed the jacknife sofa (a sofa that folds down flat into a bed) was loose. Really loose. Like, we almost tipped over and got dumped onto the floor while we were sleeping. It's hard to maintain your balance while sleeping, so I figured it should be fixed.

Yesterday, I decided to see what the heck was up with our bed. I folded it partially so I could see underneath where it mounts to the 'bed frame', and noticed...it was not mounted. All the mounting brackets/holes were empty.

So I pulled it out.

Wheel well at the left, freshwater tank in the middle, small storage at the right. Also, white cocaine (baking soda) drifts everywhere.

Yeah. Similar to pretty much the entire rest of my motorhome, there was baking soda spread VERY liberally underneath. (The previous owners either owned stock in a baking soda company, or figured the stuff was a magical ward against evil or something). Also, the mounting wood that the jacknife sofa would bolt into here is not even present. Long gone. AWOL.

Sighing, I figured I needed a beer before I could tackle this. Back in the house, I check the fridge. Nothing there. I check it again. Zilch. Then I see the beer I've been trying to avoid drinking, huddled at the back of the fridge like a creepy old guy doing creepy things in a creepy alleyway. Creepy.

Desperate Times, Desperate Measures: Point Squash Ale

I really didn't want to drink this beer, but it's been sitting in my fridge since last autumn, part of a 12 bottle mix pack of various questionable flavors of beer. This Squash Ale was the scariest of the pack, so here it sits, almost a year later, waiting for me, daring me to pop the cap. Reluctantly, I dive in.

It has a good color, and a scent that smells of pumpkin spice and mustiness. But, like, no head. Granted, my bottle is old, but the carbonation level is good so it's not flat. I'd want a wee bit more head though. After a couple sips, the taste and thickness of the beer gets cloying. You know they added extra 'squash' flavor, so that's all you really taste. I don't mind most pumpkin beers if they're done right, but subtlety is key. I don't want to feel like I'm drinking a pumpkin pie, but that's kind of where you end up at the bottom of the glass.

Unrelatedly, Point Brewery is about 30 miles away from where I am in Wisconsin.

Style Vegetable/Spice Beer
Country USA
Brewery Stevens Point Brewery
Alcohol 5.7%

Appearance Great red color, but flat head that might as well be nonexistent. Good carbonation.
Aroma Spice. Pumpkin spice. That's about it.
Taste Sweet and pumpkin-y. Yes, it tastes like pumpkin spice.
Palate Really thick and a bit cloying initially, you can only get away with sipping it or else it's just too much.

Overall I've had better beers. Like, pretty much any beer I've had would be better. Still, I knew it was a pumpkin beer going in, but I just couldn't get past the 'pumpkin spice' aspect of it. Maybe these kinds of beers can only be consumed late in the fall, around harvest time, and not in the middle of August.
My Score 40/100

Consensus from the Masses:

I hope you enjoyed reading this review more than I enjoyed drinking this beer! Thanks to @detlev for sponsoring the #beersaturday theme!

which brand would you score 100/100

It's a good question. Probably none. If you put something at 100 then you have NO room for improvement, and that's just not possible. 98 or 99 would be quality belgians like St Bernardus Abt 12, Gulden Draak, or a good IPA like Pliny the Elder or a good barleywine/strong ale like Arrogant Bastard. So many good beers out there, but none is 100.

Are we sure "No Score" means they just haven't rated it yet, or that it's just THAT bad?

And no wonder we almost fell out of bed!

Probably not enough chumps have bought it and reviewed it. They need a minimum number first so they can show a legitimate average.

My guess is the "chumps" who buy this aren't the beer-reviewing sort :)

What are you trying to say here?

Well, other than you, of course.

Hi, Good evening. I'm now following you now.

Funny stuff and a beer to go with it, sounds like a winner to me!

Thanks for reading! The beer itself was no winner, but at least it gave me good fodder for my post.

Deliciosoooo :D

Don't you just love working on a well used RV? Most of them are built to a sort of minimum standard to start with so it gets interesting as they age.

Heh, yea. The minimum standard is 'as cheap as possible'. Pretty much every motorhome is built that way, with a very few exceptions for some of the custom (expensive) ones. Still...it's fun, since it's small and easy to make a big change quickly.

That is one good thing about the cheap construction, it's easy enough to work on to fix stuff, usually better than it was.

You nailed it!

I don't think my friend or her dog would drink squished beer. And they both love their beer.

Great story though...I think the baking soda was used to keep the ants out. Give it a taste, if it tastes better than the beer then it's likely got sugar mixed in with it. };-)>

Keep on Steem'n on!

Right, the baking soda supposedly discourages ants and mice, but really, I've been finding it everywhere in this RV. Inches thick in places. Fun stuff!

Hmmm it's also used to absorb smells. I hope you don't have moisture rot. I'm certain you'll figure it out...between beers. Cheers! :D

Say hi to the Mrs. for me. Don't get into Discord much these days.

logyx

Mmm pumpkin. I could enjoy some of that with a little whip.

Yesss, again a great story from @negativer with a cool beer and perfect for #BeerSaturday.
