General Washingtons Tavern Porter

LIQUID COURAGE
Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washingtons recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now. Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washingtons, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish.

Our Thoughts

Today we have "General Washingtons Tavern Porter" which is an Robust Porter that could be compared to a Strong English bitter. With a ABV of 7 this is a beer that will get you pie-eyed in no time. This beer has a lot to offer. With an IBU profile of 34 it's got a more distinguished taste but isn't overwhelmingly bitter.

Robust Porter

Robust porters are black in color and have a roast malt flavor, often reminiscent of cocoa, but no roast barley flavor. These porters have a sharp bitterness of black malt without a highly burntcharcoal flavor. Caramel and other malt sweetness should be present and in harmony with other distinguishing porter characters. Robust porters range from medium to full in body and have a malty sweetness. Hop bitterness is medium to high, with hop aroma and flavor ranging from negligible to medium. Diacetyl is acceptable at very low levels. Fruity esters should be evident, balanced with roast malt and hop bitterness.

What does ABV/IBU mean?

ABV
ABV stands for Alcohol By Volume and is listed as a percentage and lets you know how much of your beer is alcohol and how much is other stuff.

IBU
stands for International Bitterness Units measures the bitterness from hops in a beer on a scale of 0 to 100.

Beer Fact of the Day

The Ancient Egyptians built the pyramids under the influence. According to Patrick McGovern, an archaeologist from the University of Pennsylvania, workers at Giza received about four liters of beer a day.
