Giving a Macro Japanese Beer a Try Again

The wife sent me to the bottle shop to get her some Tequila last night, so naturally while there I checked out the beers available. That's how I stumbled across the magnificent looking can of Sapporo that you'll see in the video above.

Beer dog makes another appearance!

I haven't had a great experience with Japanese beers so far so was keen to try another one to see if I could find one that I liked. I was also having very spicy Mexican food for dinner so wanted something a little on the lighter side, such as a the Pale Lager that this beer is.

So What Did I Think of this Japanese Beer?

After checking ratebeer.com it became quite obvious that people generally don't like this beer. I didn't want this to sway my opinion however so went into this review with open eyes and taste buds.

The beer pours a darker amber than most of the Japanese beers that I've had but is still on the pale side. The beer forms a large, white head which was new to me with beer from Japan. It has mild carbonation, which seemed well balanced, and an aroma of sweet malts with very subtle notes of hops.

The flavours primarily consist of malts and mild hops. The bitterness is extremely low. The flavours are very mild, and didn't in any way overpower my spicy Mexican food. And to be honest, seemed to pair well with this meal.

That certainly looks like beer

I'd be telling a giant fib if I said that I didn't actually enjoy this beer. It isn't a great beer by any stretch of the imagination. But I've had much worse than this from Japan. Would I drink it again? If it was the only option for sure, but I'm not going out of my way to get another can.

I've always preferred Sapporo to Kirin or Asahi. They have a few labels that I prefer over others but I really enjoy this beer with Japanese food, mostly because there's usually no other great beer to order.

Sapporo is also a good steward of beer and the brands they own. Unibroue hasn't changed since they purchased them and Anchor Brewing looks like they will thrive as a Sapporo brand.

They follow the rules and don't lobby against other breweries. I don't know if they go so far as to help lift smaller breweries therefore lifting everybody but they certainly do no harm.

I really didn’t enjoy Kirin or Asahi when I tried them. Sapporo at least appear to produce something that is reasonable quality in a macro format.

I’ve never considered whether a brand is a good steward of the industry or not before. This is an interesting perspective.

Well, if you don't like the beer it's still a terrible reason to drink it. 😁 But if you're ambivalent or trying to choose from equally bad options, it is something to consider. Sapporo or that bland brand owned by Lion/Kirin? Saporro.

The opposite can be true for good brands owned by, for lack of a better term, assholes who hurt smaller, independent brewers. I choose not to buy these beers anymore, if/when it can be helped.

Pity it wasn't the greatest, but at least it was drinkable... In other news, the dog looks like he's eyeing up your Mexican food in the background ;o)

After I took that she crept up under the coffee table and waited until I dropped crumbs. :P

Ha ha , clever dog! :o)

Sometimes it works, and sometimes.... Japanese beers have generally underwhelmed. But my hand continually tries to go for the pretty silver can. I'm glad you reinforced my will power. :-)) Thanks.

Here to help. 😜

ya, not a great one. Last time i had one was at an amazing Japanese restaurant and my friend paid for it. So no complaining from me. But i wouldn't pay for this beer.

Yep. Definitely not one that I’d pay for again. Especially given that my home-brew is much more enjoyable and complex.

I've had Sapporo a few times in the past. Like you, I was underwhelmed. Good thing the Japanese are excellent sake producers!

This is true. Maybe I should review sake instead next time. :)

Well if I lived in Japan, this is probably what I would be drinking since they don't seem to have many options from microbreweries as far as I know. I could be completely wrong though. This is definitely not the worst Japan can offer.

There is definitely worse out there. This was actually drinkable compared to the previous Japanese beer that I had.

According to RateBeer there are 289 active breweries in Japan. So that's probably about 285 craft breweries. A bunch of sake makers have converter to also make beer. Even Hitachino started this way and still make great sake (and beer).

Warm sake (a good one) is the best! If you want beer, the Belgian ones are really the ones to beat.

I think I kind of agree with you on this one. Although I have heard that some of the Japanese micro breweries are quite decent.

You are braver than me, I like to stick with what I know. Although, I do prefer liquors. Have you tried Drambuie or the Dutch jenever? Cloudberry liquor is also great, but a Finnish thing.

Correction, the American ones are the ones to beat. 😉 Before you say anything about Bud and Coors, I give you Jupiler and Maes, the Belgian equivalents.

Ah yes, the Heineken equivalents over here! I haven't tried any of the good American ones though. Any recommendations?

It depends on what you can get. Of the larger independent brewers you might be able to get Stone and Brooklyn and maybe Sierra Nevada.

Thanks, I will keep an eye out for them!

Japan does not have a great glory with their conventional beers. Yes, they have some good qualities, but nothing extraordinary and exciting at all.
On the other side, they host great micro brewery stage, of course! In the last year or two some newer players appeared and started their "game".
I've tried COEDO beers, which are very famous in their KONBINI(Convenience stores) and they are quality beers at not very high price!

The India Pale Lager is great!

Cheers!

They even look amazing in those bottles. I wonder if they export to Australia?

We can't even get The Chita whisky in the US, let alone a bunch of other whiskies (which I saw in Australia). I would hope you get Coedo there. Coedo is solid and they export well because they are not hop bombs.

Nice, I will look for these in the Netherlands.
