Hello Steemians! Feeling down? Need a lift? Me too! I was inspired partly by @hendrix22's #thegoodnews, and partly by Thomas Sanders on YouTube, with his Reasons To Smile videos (he has three):
So what, you may be asking, is a brain ball? You're reading a Druid's blog, I make weird Celtic historical references.
Brain balls were a thing in ancient Ireland (or possibly all of Celtic culture, I don't know), which was pretty much the worse punishment saved for your most hated enemies. You see, it was custom to take the heads of your enemies in battle, because the belief was that the spirit resided in the head, or more specifically, the brain. If you took someone's head home with you after battle, you had taken possession of their soul. It was a big fuck you in the afterlife, beyond killing a person in this life. So if you scooped out that person's brain, and mixed bits of it with clay or lime or something so that it hardened into a ball you could throw with your sling, you were scattering bits of that person's soul all over the damn place, so they could not get rest in the afterlife. Not to mention, you were possessing anybody you hit with a brain ball with a piece of someone's soul.
If you've read my book, Son of the Sun, Connor, the king of Ulster (really a real historical person), who is in the book (but the book doesn't include his death), supposedly dies when he is hit with a brain ball, it cannot be taken out, and over the course of a year, he goes mad and dies. Possession? Science says there are parasites in our brains that don't do US any harm, but introduce them to somebody else's brain, and they'll eat it, causing mounting damage until it's fatal. Parasite possession. Ancient ways usually have reasons, no?
If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know I deal with major depression. My most hated enemy, hey? So ...let's fuck that bitch up and possess it with happiness.
Morbid, violent metaphor for a feel-good post ...just roll with it, I'm fucked up. 😂
Onward to happy, silly, and feel-good things!
Denver recently approved a 5-story youth homeless shelter:
https://www.denverite.com/denver-clears-way-five-story-homeless-youth-center-overland-49309/
Urban Peak already exists, but the current shelter is only one story, and its offices and such are scattered all over the city. The new building will include "40 shelter beds, several dorm-style units and up to 60 units of permanent, supportive housing." So HOORAY more resources for homeless youth!

This guy figured out how to make bagpipes with a plastic bag, recorders, tape, and pens:

And yes, there's a video of him playing it:
Watch it. Just watch it. Maybe don't share this instructable with your kids, but watch it. 😂 Goddess bless the internet.

This organization allows homeless folks to use their mailing address as their own:
http://amylfreeman.com/book/i-get-mail-therefore-i-am/
"Having no mailing address pretty much stinks, both practically and emotionally.
Practically speaking, the fact is, if you are trying to (re-) enter society, you will have to (re-) create connections, paper trails, systems of interactions with large commercial and governmental entities. If you don’t have a mailing address, this task is nearly impossible. While a lot of correspondence is now done on line, plenty of agencies processing crucial paperwork, like IDs and benefits information, still rely on the good old U.S. Postal Service. And where email would suffice, that’s not always an option for people living unsheltered. Even a free email account is of no use to someone who a) has no idea how to use one; or b) has no access to a computer, no library card to let them log into a public terminal."
Kaitlin has opened 1000 cards and has gotten a birthday video from her favorite actor:

If you didn't see my original post a while back about birthday cards for Kaitlin, here it is: https://steemit.com/ophumanangels/@phoenixwren/ophumanangels-a-mission-for-all-you-angels ...details are there, but tl;dr Kaitlin thought she didn't have friends. So her mom put out a call, and now Kaitlin is hosting a big Unbirthday Party for LOTS of kids this summer, and has received an outpouring of love. 💛

If you haven't read it, I really recommend the book The Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker, which was one of the sources for this video.

"The rate of cancer deaths dropped 23 percent between 1991 and 2012
The cancer death rate peaked in 1991 at 215 cancer deaths per 10,000 people. After that, the rate started to drop steadily with fewer people smoking, improvements in treatment and earlier detection. The equivalent of more than 1.7 million deaths were avoided in those 21 years, according to the American Cancer Society."

A chain reaction of six people donate a kidney to strangers in Chicago:
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/strangers-kidney-donation-sets-off-chain-reaction-good-deeds/
"When no suitable donors had been found, his friend Philip Cameli stepped up to volunteer his kidney, but, as fate dictated, he was not a match. Meanwhile, a 44-year-old woman named Kimberly Cooper just walked into the hospital one day to sign-up to volunteer to give away her kidney, and the computer matched her to young Brendan.
Cameli was so inspired by her eagerness to benefit a stranger that the teen decided to go ahead and donate his kidney, too. But it didn’t end there!
The woman who was a sudden match for his organ, Clotilde Ruiz, had a daughter who also was so moved that her mom was being saved by a stranger, that she decided to offer her kidney, too.
This same pattern of selfless donation continued until six different strangers offered their kidneys to patients at Chicago’s Northwestern Hospital who were in need of transplants. All had been negative matches for loved ones or friends, but were moved through compassion to help another."
And finally, Cheese Doodles = Happiest Guy Evar:

I hope you feel a little bit happier after reading this post! Have a great day!

At least you didn't say they ate the brains of slain enemies 😳
That homeless shelter for young women looks bleak - literally just a bed? Good to hear there are some more resources being made available. Not having a mailing address is a big problem, authorities of every kind can't cope with it. My experience was with the health services, everything fell to pieces when there wasn't a permanent address in place. Again, good to know there are some mediating solutions, even if the fundamental problem still needs working on.
