No one knows for sure what came first, the house or the door?
It is a subject of intense debate in certain magic circles that promote gossip while sipping tea in lazy afternoons by the fireplace.
Their cats purr in bliss, amused at their gossip, knowing full well that the door answers only to certain sentences out of ancient lost poems.
The cats won't tell, they sleep and they dream.
Jonathan dreams along with them, asleep in the rug by the fire. In his dreams, he travels across the street and stares at the house in disbelief because in his dream, the house shines and sings strange wondrous words he doesn't understand but make his blood boil.
Jonathan believes that inside he'll find an enchanted princess guarding a treasure, waiting for someone to come and dispel the curse that keeps her prisoner.
The house smiles, and starts to weave his dream into something palpable, into something real, the house breaths magic into everything.
In his dream Jonathan sings along with the house. He sings words he doesn't understand until the door screeches and opens slowly, bit by bit. Inside all is dark except a corner far away bathed in light where a woman weaves golden chains into her hair.
Jonathan goes inside, a little afraid at first than boldly he continues towards the light. Could this be the enchanted princess of his dreams?
The woman is sitting in a pool of treasure: silver, gold and gems. Jonathan smiles at her.
She stops adorning her hair and with her hands she motions him to approach. He is almost at her reach when he notices her fangs...
He stops in disbelief when she jumps at him, mouth wide open, displaying her dragon teeth.
Jonathan wakes up in a sweat. No one pays any attention to him, there's biscuits and cakes and magical trinkets on the tables near him.
Only the cats, half awake, chuckle without stirring. They succeeded once more. The door is a portal, and they guard the door. Beyond it, mysterious and magical dangers are kept hidden from humans.
