Shooting on Film, deeper pleasures of Making Images.
I'm here to express my love of shooting on medium format camera. I have a Fujifilm gw670ii. I load it with Kodak Portra 120.
I have been shooting for about a decade now, and I've mostly learned to shoot on digital cameras. I've had a 35mm film camera since Day 1, but I never shot with it; however when I saw the quality and the feel my friend was getting out of a medium format camera, I had to try it.
I purchased an affordable medium format camera, that's easy to carry. I fell in love!
I'm connected to the process of creating the image with this camera, like I never had been with a digital one. I see the frames all around me as I move through the environment, and time passes in a different way.
I only have 10 frames in each roll of time, and when I let the shutter go I have the picture in my mind, rather than on the screen behind the camera. That picture in my head is always the magical in that moment, and I get excited with impatience to get the film back from the lab to see how my vision was realized. Sometimes it blows you away, and sometimes you just say, "well that didn't work." But that's the fun of it.
The prints I get out of these negatives are also incredible. The creative process of shooting on film is very satisfying to me. I encourage anyone who's getting uninspired with shooting on digital to give film a try, and experiment with different cameras / formats / lenses / and film. There are so many combinations to try. Go check out the local used camera stores, or flea markets. There could be gems to be found for next to nothing! These gears are cheap compared to the latest digital equipments (unless of course you go for the classic top end or niche cameras).
