"Why do you need to photograph these girls?"
Asked my girlfriend.
I think the answer is pretty obvious, but the reasoning to do it is harder to articulate; especially to your girlfriend.
I don't know what "normal" people are suppose to do, but it's clear that it is more conventional to keep your "man gaze" to your spouse and not on other women. In terms of being true to your spouse/partner I think it's a good idea you understand what it means to be partners in life. Photographing women opens up so many questions that aren't asked if you just subscribe to "how things are done" that it is impossible to cover all of it in one single post, but I'm interested in what this rabbit hole uncovers about what relationships between people are truly, what objective beauty is, how to accept reality, how one should be free to explore intellectual exploration through creativity, asking questions about norms, understanding emotional intelligence, how we age gracefully... so many questions!
It really brings the most passionate responses from people.
I don't only photograph young, beautiful women. I photograph all kinds of things. But generally what lures me to photograph anything is I'm drawn to it by a certain character. Could be a feeling, its aesthetic, a moment, beauty, ugliness, personality, etc. When I photograph beautiful women, that's just the reason I'm lured by them initially. Because they're beautiful. I think it's important and also liberating to accept these people exist as a fact. I understand it's delicate to admit this to your girlfriend. But I think that if both can accept it as a truth, and explore what this practice exposes in how it makes you feel, and why they command attention, and answer them honestly, we can even find some enlightening things about ourselves. When you get over that fact, you can really capture what's really there. If she's beautiful, make her look beautiful. If she's sexy, capture a sexy portrait. If she's youthful, give it some dynamism. There's always something you can learn, and you should be truthful in approaching your questions, then the reward will be much more than just a great photograph.
