Gridcoin has the opportunity to schedule regular community hangouts

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies. More info: https://steemit.com/beyondbitcoin/@cm-steem/gridcoin-securely-rewarding-boinc-computation-on-top-of-pos/

I participated in the following beyond bitcoin episode (CM voice reveal!): http://soundcloud.com/beyond-bitcoin-hangouts/e163-2016-07-08-beyond-bitcoin-peerplays-gridcoin-cylonmaker2053s-investing-course-more#t=1:12:53

Since the previous beyond bitcoin episode, @officialfuzzy has setup a dedicated Gridcoin room within the BeyondBitcoin mumble server. Massive thanks to @officialfuzzy , without him this would not be possible.

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between cryptocurrency communities.

How long will the hangout last?

A rough estimate would be an hour, but since this is the first hangout it could last longer.

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, users are distributed around the world so they may not share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency & nobody wan't to be tuning into an argument.

I would mine grc, but my computer doesn't have enough hashpower :(
I do like the message it brings though, and how it actually applies itself to real world problem solving.
Maybe the miners will cure ebola.

You can pool the work from many devices, multiple PCs, laptops, Android devices and even cloud computers like the AWS free use ones. Its not like Bitcoin where you need the most powerful kit to win the race, in Gridcoin small contributions are rewarded.

ooo I never knew about the ability for droids and cloud computing for this i'll have to look into it again.

Even the most basic hardware (such as, 32-bit Pentium under light-weigh debian/ubuntu-based distro or even just ARM SoC devices) can net some GRC. Albeit power consumption is a concern if you're in it for the return on investment. Although, if you're in it for other reasons I highly suggest you giving it a go!

Yeah, I mine on my old cellphones

Fridays Beyond Bitcoin Mumble time always works, that is 10 am in the US and around 4pm in Germany. Would love to have that at a different day.

We have community members from all around the world, picking a perfect time is quite difficult.

Perhaps scheduling two calls in the one day to accommodate all time zones would be beneficial?

A good idea if we can get a critical mass for each call. Weekends are better, I have a day job working for The Man

Worth tuning in to gain insight into other crypto communities, for inspiration and to check that your mumble configs are correct before the sat gridcoin hangout :)

thanks for the plug cm! please remind everyone tomorrow at the hangout about your hangout and it would be awesome if you would give updates

about what is going on in gridcoin's community (kind of a short recap) of your this hangout at the next hangout.

:)

I am gonna join you guys, so that we can talk about BlockPay. cheers

Topic suggestion: we have thousands of active members but reaching them is difficult, more prominent in wallet communications would be good.
Incentivised voting, perhaps a GRC lottery to encourage voting participation - each vote someone wins a little GRC stake. Other engagement mechanisms.

I think our email marketing idea is the best method of reaching our user base: https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/48049-email-marketing-via-team-founder-newsletter/

Just need Rob to provide email lists from the projects he is team founder for.

Cool no arguments here

Sepulcher once talked about a similar voter incentivisation scheme in which those who voted received a small payout (25 grc or something). We've currently got a seriously poor voting participation rate; currently we're averaging about 50 mil out of 750 mil voting weight for recent foundation polls - very poor community voting participation :(

So you do have a good point, I think a manual reward system would be easier than hardcoding voting incentives within the client.

Yeah for me the voting itself is secondary, I just want to make sure people are engaged so they are less likely to drift off - voting reward is just a means to an end

voting on the agenda after 2 days, see
https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@erkan/topic-voting-for-gridcoin-hangout-001

the leading topics are:

  • 4th Generation BOINC credit system
  • Gridcoin roadmap
  • Magnitude+Balance voting type: Magnitude weight unbalanced?
  • Magnitude multiplier
  • team membership
  • whitelist change of allowed projects for Gridcoin

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Gridcoin mining and scalability for the end-user or miner.

Can you elaborate?

Scalability isn't a big deal, we could hardfork to larger blocks if required, there's no blockstreamcore cartel dictating block sizes.

There's certainly scalability challenges with removing the team requirement - suddenly going from 2k in the neural network to tens of thousands would certainly put stress on the neural network system.

What would you like to discuss regarding Gridcoin mining?

Wow, all of these things could definitely be discussed because they're related to mining. I meant mining scalability for the end user, basically. So, in the context of how one could use other devices to mine PoR and comparing the efficiency of various methods through abstract discussion. ARM vs CPU vs GPU, essentially. For example, there are quite a few who use cloud-based VM for mining PoR and/or also others who own their own hardware.

Not convinced by an affiliate program, but the wiki page and email marketing sound like good ideas we can implement without too much trouble.

Edit: I'll look into email marketing asap!

Topic suggestion: Discussing regular BOINC competitions.

  • What projects should we regularly schedule competitions for?
  • Should we use a small quantity of foundation funds to reward users?

Can the mandatory team membership requirement be removed to attract more users to gridcoin?
And what has to be done to achive that.

communication media:

a. From where do you get your Gridcoin news ?
twitter, reddit, irc, steemit, ...

b. And why do you not use some/one of them anymore ?
off-topic, ...

Topic suggestion:
Gridcoin's developing interaction with the Bitshares platform, specifically:

An Market-Pegged-Asset (MPA) for Gridcoin has been created on the Bitshares platform:
http://cryptofresh.com/a/GRIDCOIN
https://bitshares.openledger.info/#/asset/GRIDCOIN

The 'GRIDCOIN' MPA's price feeds are going to be introduced with the next release of Xeroc's price feed scripts, until then the GRIDCOIN MPA is not live.

Once fully integrated into openledger & bitshares, we'll have a presence on their platforms such as:
https://moonstone.io/
https://openledger.info/

https://steemit.com/crypto-news/@kencode/smartcoins-wallet-v1-0-1--upgrading-an-account-to-ltm- (Smartcoins mobile wallet)

Topic suggestion:
A chunk of time dedicated to introducing ourselves, and perhaps an an icebreaker (such as stating your favourite BOINC project & what you're excited about in Gridcoin's future).

To all who participate in this mumble session:

  • currently, some data of yours is leaked on the mumble server (e.g. your IP, OS, ...)
  • e.g. not only the mumble admin, but also other users can see that

You can avoid some of that leaking by running the mumble client e.g. over a VPN or in a (specially-configured) VM.

Topic proposal:

Now that the wallet seems to be stable for windows and linux users and syncing seems to work flawlessly, I would propose another reddit marketing campaign. The last one on r/futurology created an unprecendented influx of users, we should try to achieve something smilar now with that much more stability in everything.

Topic suggestion (by vega40k):

the Gridcoin wallet should be usable by real noobs
(installation very easy, fast and successful mining, ...)

may overlap with topic: mining and scalability

I agree with you here Erkan, the installation can be time consuming and complicated . If potential new users don't have the required computer knowledge they may just give up. Simplicity is most important.
