The apostle Paul is a convert to the Christian faith who comes from the Jewish religion. Paul is also an expert of the greek philosophy. This is why Paul frequently mentions sophistry in his writings.
The sophistry is a system of knowledge with the appearance of philosophy but it is not. Many religions today are actually schools of sophistry, an example in the early days of Christianity is Manichaeism. Sophistry and heresy are almost equivalent concepts, heresy means the teaching of the error. When heresy becomes an appearance of philosophical doctrine, that heresy is considered sophistry. In Greece in the days of the early church schools of sophistry were common, there was no clear difference between sophists and philosophers, in reality each person followed his own teacher as he saw fit.
Do not confuse sophistry with rhetoric, rhetoric is the art of discourse on what is matter of opinion. Rhetoric is a technique that seeks persuasion.
Paul warns of the dangers of sophistry: "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every though to make it obedient to Christ.", 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.
Paul is precise: we demolish arguments, sophisms. That are opposed to the knowledge of God (the doctrine of the kingdom of God), that is to say that they are opposed to wisdom.
Paul uses preaching to confront the false wisdom that oppress the common people: "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world". The sophistic seek deception and aims to keep away man from the path of mercy, the path of piety.
The bible explains that people who live accepting "pretty lies" or "comforting lies" can only bear the fruits of death, the works of the flesh: "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.", Galatians 5:19-21
