The bible in the book of revelations, written probably by the apostle John, tells us how to interpret the number 666: "Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666"

In numerology 7 represents the world, 7 days it took God to create everything. The 8 represents God and his perfections, that is 7 +1; 8 are the beatitudes in Matthew; 8 are the affirmations of the "I am", seven in the gospel of John and one in the book of Revelations.
But the 6 represents something lower than God and the world, that is man. The 666 represents in the Bible the greatest imperfection of man, or to say, the man in his greatest imperfection and this is the number of the beast.
We must also understand that the number 6 repeats three times, just as there is a holy trinity (Father, son and holy spirit) that is 888, there is a diabolic trinity (beast, false prophet and antichrist), a 666. This is in general terms a possible interpretation
The Bible also adds that this can only be perceived by the spiritual gifts of widom and knowledge (insight). This is so because the spiritual gift of knowledge is the capacity "to read inside", that is to say, to penetrate the superficiality of things.
The spiritual gift of knowledge is "progressive thinking" and "ethical reasoning". The reason and the spiritual gift of knowledge are different faculties of the mind. The goal of the reason are the temporary things, the goal of the gift of knowledge are the eternal and immutable truths. The gifts of wisdom, discernment, and science are the gifts of Godlikeness.
These gifts are not received at baptism but are subsequent, they are gifts obtained when the Holy Spirit is received: "When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might received the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit." Acts 8:15-17
These gifts are necessary to understand the depth of the scriptures: "He opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures", Luke 24:45.
The book of revelations somehow reminds us of the importance of greater gifts: "eargerly desire the greater gifts", 1 Corinthians 12:31
