Jesus teaches us frequently about the inner teacher: "But you are not to be called Master, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not called anyone on earth "father", for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah", Matthew 23:8-10
Also: "But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you" Matthew 10:19-20
The apostle Paul explains: "Don' t you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst" 1 Corinthians 3:16.
The holy spirit represents in the bible the figure of the inner teacher, the divine substance inside us. In the bible the figure of the inner teacher is essential to distinguish the spiritual man from the natural man and fundament the triple division of man: body, soul and spirit:
"The natural man does not accept the things that come from the spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man make judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment" 1 Corinthians 2:14-15
The natural man cannot understand the truths of God because he lacks the inner teacher.
Saint Agustine in his book "The Teacher" develops the concept of inner teacher. He takes the philosophical ideas of Plato about the two worlds: the physical world that can be perceived with the senses and the world of ideas that can be perceived with the intelligence. To capture the immaterial objects, Saint Augustine tells us we need an inner being to guide us.
Saint Augustine develops an interesting idea and maintains that the rational soul constantly consults the inner teacher, and that when we receive information it is the inner teacher who teaches and not someone outside us. That is why, says Saint Augustine, men are mistaken in calling teachers who are not.
