Yes. To be exact, in this context here it is used as metaphor for the ion balance in the medium the proto-cell evolved in, the same ion balance you and I have in every cell in our body. Aldosterone maintains that balance, so if you eat to much sodium then you pee it out and if you eat too much potassium then you pee it out.
