Surely you have heard that "the platypus is the only mammal that lays eggs", this claim is popularized by television programs such as the successful Disney series "Phineas & Ferb". And in fact it is a primitive mammal belonging to the Monotremata order, which has some characteristics typical of reptiles.
But Agent P is not "the only one", in this order we have another individual with the same capacity ... We are talking about the Echidna, in this case we are going to refer to the Australian species (Tachyglossus aculeatus) that lives throughout Australia and to the southwest of New Guinea.
It can measure between 30-50 cm in length, its snout of about 7.5 cm has a narrow mouth and a long sticky tongue like anteaters. It has a dense coat of shades ranging from chestnut to black, it has lighter colored spines that remind us of hedgehogs. The females are provided with a fold in the belly similar to the kangaroos' pouch. It has legs with 5 fingers that it uses to dig and a short tail.
As expected by the characteristics of its language is an insectivorous animal, with special taste for ants and termites.
Taxonomy:
Animalia Kingdom.
Philum: Chordata.
Class: Mammalia.
Order: Monotremata.
Family: Tachyglossidae (Echidnas).
Genus: Tachyglossus.
Species: T. aculeatus.
Due to the climate in the areas where it inhabits and its limited thermoregulation, the hours of extreme temperatures pass in subterranean galleries that excavate.
They are very shy and lonely animals, in case of feeling threatened they can curl up like a hedgehog to expose their thorns or even dig quickly.
Finally, did you know that one of the popular SEGA mascots of the series "Sonic the Hedgehog" is an echidna? That's right, we're talking about Knucles, this character with red hair and huge fists.
See you in another post. Regards!
Nos vemos en otro post. Saludos!
